I'm giving it a go again because using some Tesco Clubcard points made it relatively economical, but I doubt I will renew. So much information is available online these days, and articles on layouts just don't float my boat anymore, no matter how good.

When I saw the list of upcoming articles in the last issue It crossed my mind that there had been a glue super test in MR relatively recently, and on that occasion it had struck me as effectively being a showcase for the Deluxe Materials range. Lo and behold, what do we get in this issue but another article heavily featuring Deluxe Materials products. Now, I like their stuff and have used a number of items, but the degree of prominence given to their products in this (and other) MR articles comes across to me as being 'advertorial' in nature rather than a review of the available market alternatives.

Having subscribed since issue 1 I think it may be time to reconsider, as I feel this months issue is very poor.

Perhaps you'd like to pm me and expand on this?

Also, regarding the Ultimate Glue Supertest, there was a lot more than just De Luxe Materials featured. George tried to be as wide-ranging as possible - just check the cross-referenced 'graph' of which glue sticks what.

A couple of years ago, I would have rated Model Rail as my favourite having also followed it since almost the first issue. I sat down last night and skimmed back through all my 2013 issues and something's missing although I can't quite put my finger on it? I could find nothing in that entire year's worth of Model Rail magazines that I would be likely to go back to for reference. There does seem to be some repetition but I'm not sure that's it. Thankfully I don't subscribe - but if I'm only going to read something once, I'm not sure there's much point.

Edit: Before I'm accused of a witch-hunt against MR, I also find the same is true of other titles, but just to a lesser extent. As 50A55B says, it could just be because there is so much into available online.

i find the "available on line" reference applies to a few other non modelling railway publications too which kind of spoils things, last month i flicked through a couple of mags and found umpteen pictures that i'd already seen on various forums, picture sites etc

Just a thought ARE there too many high quality railway modelling  mags  on sale

and most coming out within days of each other

In Ireland (Republic) we pay on average  euro 5.50 per copy and if you bought

the mainstream ones ie Rail Express Model Rail Hornby BRM  and RM would

cost approx. 264 euros per year

rant over

I rather suspect that all the magazines are caught between a rock and a hard place insofar as uniqueness of content is concerned. I'm sure it is absolutely inevitable that those people who contribute to the magazines are also very likely to contribute to various forums and other media, and therefore some overlap (particularly noticeable to the well-read readers of this forum especially, I should think) is likely to be absolutely inevitable....

It's really one of those things – some issues of any magazine are going to be more to my taste than others (I should like it filled with industrial and light railways, myself - but that wouldn't be universally popular!) - but having looked at the others, of the 'broad-sheet' magazines, I prefer to support this one, as I'd rather they were still publishing it in years to come.

I personally feel model rail has evolved over time. with issue 200! (Christ almighty!!), fast approaching, I am still using issue 1 and the supplements that proceeded it as reference. the mag is still very good, but with the likes of Hornby, the re-launched BRM, and others now using the step by step approach and the "if its a kit we built it" approach first used by model rail back in 1997, model rail has lost its uniqueness through no fault of its own. they say imitation is the greatest form of compliment. I still find it an enjoyable read, usually from back to front. starting with backscene.

I must admit I am having a feeling of de ja vue. Not just the glue test that happened a few months ago, but have I not seen Abbey Road before? Might just be that it appeared at around four of the exhibitions I have been to this season.

I have to agree. I didn't think that there was much of interest in this issue. Maybe it's the time of the year, maybe it's the fact that MR have 13 issues per year? I dunno! I think that I'll reconsider whether I continue with my sub when it expires next year.
