Weathering MGR's

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys. I'm trying to put together a scale rake of Hornby 00 gauge MGR wagons and am beginning to get to the point where I need to weather and superdetail them. The Hornby model is a good basis I think to start from and I have seen some articles about them but am unsure whether to re-spray the stainless steel body as I have seen done or whether to leave it I just wondered if anyone out there has any experience of weathering  some and can offer any ideas and advice. I know there are etched parts such as disc brakes etc that you can add which I'm mulling over. I also need some advice on suitable buffers as I need to replace several. I can google plenty of pics of MGR's for prototype inspiration but i'm still not entirely sure of good techniques etc. I am also planning on respraying all the cradles railfreight red as that suits my era but it's the weathering i'm still too commit too.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Rich

The siver finish needs toning down at the very least, either by dry-brushing or air-brushing with black. The 'silver' finish is actually galvanised steel so, unless struck by something like a loading shovel bucket, rust is not often seen.

I checked out Martyn Read's site, which has a lot of useful shots, including ones of interiors. Here's some links, in case you haven't seen them:-

On the earliest wagons, cradles had been more of a bauxite colour, and some stayed like that for a long while.

One feature of the weathering of wagons in some areas was what look like horizontal tyre tracks on the flat bits of the sides- that's precisely what they are, as the wagons were manouvred during loading/unloading by a lineside device that used tyred wheels to engage on the wagon side.

I'm not sure where you might get buffers from- they seem to have shorter bodies than most OLEOs.

I have resprayed a rake of 18 of the newer HAA's, using alclad paints as per an article by George Dent in model rail. I also painted the frames Railfreight red, but also included two painted the older bauxite to break up the uniformity of the rake. Weathering was(IIRC) just a light coat of track dirt. I keep meaning to add the characteristic tyre marks along the side, once I have figured out how to do it. May pop into the loft later and take some photo's

Somewhat later a response than I envisaged, but finally I can post a couple of pics of my resrayed HAA's.post-512-0-40015700-1388514508_thumb.jpgpost-512-0-46496900-1388514527_thumb.jpg

Hopefully shows the metal bodies painted with several shades of Alclad lacquer. Cradles reprayed Railfreight red and Bauxite. Tops codes by Fox.

Loads are Parkside Dundas inserts and Carr's fine coal.

How is your project getting on, Firefly.Any update ?

Hi Steve.

Still been collecting parts. I'm struggling to get the railfreight red paint. I went to get some railmatch paint yesterday but the shop owner informed me that the colour is not one railmatch do as a spray can so i'll need to find someone who can spray the cradles for me. i have bought some grey/silver steel paint and primer so i'm ready to make a start. oh and i need to get the transfers.

Will keep you posted.

Rich
