RMweb Gold colin penfold Posted December 12, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 12, 2013 Smashing Boris thank you. my highlights were the RMs and RTs at Victoria, the traction engine with my surname, and my top fave was the shot of GWRRob taking a cutting torch to a job lot of Hornby Star bogie wheels!! Fat Controller
The Wynns' lorry was a 'Pacific' TR1, originally built for the US Army as a M26 tank transporter (the 'Dragon Wagon')- Wynn's had six, one of which is preserved:- http://ccmv.aecsouthall.co.uk/p544429249 I wonder where that shot of the rather grand country station which looked to have fallen on hard times was? Certainly the grandest 'tied housing' I've seen.
RMweb Gold grandadbob Posted December 12, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 12, 2013 Great find Boris - I loved the quote at the end on the new services such as the Blue Pullman etc - "They bring nearer the day when passengers will have nothing at all to complain about but don't worry, it's not likely to be this year! Never a truer word!
Ozexpatriate
I wonder where that shot of the rather grand country station which looked to have fallen on hard times was? Pete S
The last comment was very apt even today, Pete (who remembers all of that!)
giz
Didn't the voiceover say Newmarket? It was the original terminus station at Newmarket, as per the Disused Stations link below: http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/n/newmarket/index.shtml
Fat Controller
Didn't the voiceover say Newmarket? I forgot to turn the sound on....
5050
Excellent. "The day will soon come when passengers will have nothing to complain about" Oh yeh!? I suppose 50 years isn't long in the broad scheme of things, like the history of the world, the universe and everything. I especially liked the shots of the early days at Middleton and Crich. The view of the road and level crossing outside the Middleton pre-M1 motorway was good.
Ceptic
Lovely stuff in there Boris - does anybody else remember the 'Schools' down at Beaulieu I wonder? Yep. One of the first RtR batch of models of the class, made by Hornby. A real head-turner of the time, I might add.
Edthefolkie
That's the late Merlyn Bacon, from Doncaster, driving Southampton 45 at Crich. He was one of the leading lights of the tramway museum in its earlier years. He was a practical sort of chap with a lot of patience. Which he needed with some of the goings on there!
