Pete

There is a display inside the station that shows the much higher fence together with the reopening as a through route after the end of the cold war.

I hadn't seen those photos in your link though.

There is also a railway museum south of the German end of the station which was open this trip although we didn't have tine to visit this trip.

I visited South Moravia at the end of August and managed a few days looking at trains. Went to Kromeriz on Friday 29th, a sleepy little place but provided some variety of trains in the hour or two I was there.

A trek by tram and foot deep into the Bratislava suburbs and I reached the East museum, a mainly outdoor display of stock. There were a few people working on the exhibits, one of whom spoke a little English so I was able to establish that entry was free and I could wander around at will, which was great, made even better by them playing Led Zeppelin lll on a ghetto blaster. Unfortunately it was raining which dampened my enthusiasm, as I didn't have a jacket, waterproof or umbrella. I took quite a few photos, this is a selection.

On Monday 1st September, I intended to spend the day at Breclav station but again it rained all day so I was confined to taking pictures from the shelter of the station and wasn't able to explore the areas north and south of the station. They were doing some work to the overhead wires so some of the electric trains had diesel pilots. The OHL maintenance train came into the station which provided added interest. There are a lot of locos stabled around Breclav, I could only photo those near to the platforms.

At least I was able to buy a cheap brolly so didn't get quite as wet.

I'm going back to South Moravia for a few days again this Tuesday and will be travelling around by train and bus, but this time I'll be with SWMBO so I won't be spending much time taking photos of trains.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was in South Moravia again last week and despite visiting Brno, Vienna and Bratislava by train, the only pictures I took were from the Cathedral tower in Brno, which gives a good view of the northern approaches to Brno main station.

I guess it depends on what you mean by dump. When myself and Roundhouse first starting visiting in 2005 none of the main stations were anything special facilities wise but most were the original building in some shape or form. I personally quite liked it seemed close to pre-Velvet Revolution days and I wasnt walking in a carbon copy of Waterloo or Victoria back home. The loos were clean (and cheap) and we could stock up at some ungodly hour of the morning with rolls, paprika crisps, Snickers and Mountain Dew at the Pont / Relay vendor - sorted :sungum:. When I last made it over on 2008 BK (before kids) Praha H.N. had just started ungoing renovation so I'd love to know how it turned out.

Now for real dumps I'll get posting the shots from the various trunkcated ex-cross border branches we did around Liberec - huge station station building mostly unused, loads of abandoned sidings and an 5 trains a day with an 810! Perfect!

Praha Hlvani is quite a big smarter now and whilst there are the shops still there it's got a little more expensive and less choice to buy such food.

pray Masykovo on the other hand is much the same but there are various proposals to incorporate it into a new shopping centre.

Sorry, Eddie, but even New Street has got the edge, at least it's clean and doesn't look like an indoor market gone wrong! We were there in September last year and I still find it one of the most depressing stations on their network and very poor compared with the main stations in the rest of northern Europe. Everything's so dirty, I didn't see any bits that had been renovated. Disappointingly the restaurant I went into last time I was there (with lovely large ceilings and windows) had been shut so even that wasn't an alternative and we ended up in the "cafe" that had replaced it... It was raining too which didn't help!

As Roundhouse said, the City Centre is lovely which is such a shame that their "gateway" is so poor..

BTW in 2013 when I was there they had a beer festival in the central square. As those of you who have been will know there is a tram line which goes diagonally across the square so did they shut the trams down? Nope! They just ran them through with lots of hooting and very slowly to avoid the drunks... Only in Brno, eh!!! :)

In fairness I've only visited Brno once (which was enough!).  From what I remember it wasn't an easy city to navigate by car and parking was difficult around the station.  Once there, there wasn't a lot of traffic interest as freight tends to use avoiding lines.  However, despite its run-down nature, architecturally the station looked reasonably impressive (belle epoque?) and, at least, its platforms are in the open and not dark and dingy like New Street.

Hopefully... At least they can house more passengers... More tracks and platforms would have been more useful, though I think I'm going way OT!

I do like Praha Masarykovo, it has a sort of faded grandeur and a very good railway book shop tucked away in a corner!

I still prefer to call it "Stred", as I can't spell "Masarykovo", but that harks back to the days when CSD had their own bookshop in Hybernaska (which I probably can't spell either).

To drag this topic back, one of my favourite stations has to be Plzen.  Quite steamy when I first passed through and with Pilsener beer on sale from platform vendors.
