ILikeTrainsTom
Hello, This is my first post so please excuse me for mistakes! During the holidays i'm bound to get bored, so I've decided to create a micro layout. It would just be a Wills Station Halt with a siding, set in Southern Railway's 20s-30s period. The layout is named after a nearby station to my house, which was originally a halt before it was upgraded. I will keep you all updated with what's happening. Thanks for reading and Merry Christmas! RMweb Premium Hippo Posted December 22, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 22, 2013 Good luck, perhaps use some fake snow etc rather than the usual grass and make it a winter theme for a winter project? I will watch with interest Owen
ILikeTrainsTom
Hi Owen, The snow idea sounds really good! I will ponder over it. It seems that you need some skill to make it look effective, though! Thanks for the comment! Tom
RMweb Premium Hippo Posted December 22, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 22, 2013 Hi Tom Phil Parker has done a nice little write up on using snow in this months BRM. Cheers Owen

ILikeTrainsTom
Hello again, I have drawn up the track plan of Cooden Halt. The scenic section is 18 inches by 11. Unfortunately the model shop was closed so I'll have to wait for the halt. In the meantime I will prepare the baseboard. CLICK ON THE PICTURE TO SEE IT IN FULL SIZE. I planned it using AnyRail 5 EN. It's great and free! Here's the link if you wan to download it. http://www.anyrail.com/download_en.html .
Twright
Good plan there. What will the 2 sidings be used for? (goods/passengers)
cklammer
Nice plan. Being a bit more generous it could be built inside an IKEA APA box ( http://m.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/art/20078031/). Just my 0.02£ ... ILikeTrainsTom
Good plan there. What will the 2 sidings be used for? (goods/passengers) Hey Tom, The siding at the bottom is for the halt (the long rectangle) and the siding at the top is for goods, but occasionally for coaching stock as well. The smaller rectangle is the goods shed. The fiddle yard is the grey bit and will be out of view when finished. Thanks for the post and watch this space! ILikeTrainsTom
Hi all, Just to let you know the MDF board has been sourced for the baseboard, and hopefully cutting will start today. With track laying and ballasting being the next step, does anyone know how to ballast points without damaging them? Thanks, Tom
Twright
Don't put too much ballast in them and be careful with the glue. I also kept moving the point blades over every few minutes to start with so the glue didn't stick them down and the ballast didn't get in the way. If you haven't already paint where the track is going in grey so that areas that you haven't managed to put ballast in don't show up as much. Hope this helps. ILikeTrainsTom
Thanks Tom, that's really useful! Ballasting points has always been a pain!
ILikeTrainsTom
Hello all, For rolling stock I was wondering in I could re-paint a Ratio 4 wheel Coach in southern olive green. Of course it wouldn't be 'historically accurate' but who cares? It's my model railway after all! I like to know what you all think and if it is a good idea. Thanks, Tom
Twright
Hornby used to make a four wheel coach in Olive green, perhaps you could find one of these? http://www.newrailwaymodellers.co.uk/Rolling%20Stock/model-railway-Hornby-wagon-review-4-wheel-coach.htm If not then I think it would be a good idea to repaint one. ILikeTrainsTom
Hey Tom, I have three of those Hornby coaches and I have repainted one in Southern livery. At the moment I am trying to find one more to paint as I use the other two for GWR passenger trains. Do you (or anyone else) know if the Ratio coaches come with couplings? Twright
I don't know I'm afraid. Ask in the Modelling questions section.
Alex DCC layouts
Hello again, I have drawn up the track plan of Cooden Halt. The scenic section is 18 inches by 11.
ILikeTrainsTom
Hey Alex, The colours were done by creating different shapes by using Insert:Add Surface. For the grass I made the overall shape of the layout. Once I had made the shape of the layout, I clicked on it. Then it came up saying 'Fill Colour' in the task bar and all the colours come up. After I had chosen the colour (green) I 'Send to Back' the shape otherwise it overlaps the track. However if you want shapes like the halt then you don't need to. AnyRail5 takes a bit of practice to use but you'll get it soon! I hope this helps, Tom
Alex DCC layouts
Thank you very much Tom, I will now get started adding colour to my layout plans. Thanks, Alex
ILikeTrainsTom
Hi everyone, Just to let you all know that the baseboard has been done and the fiddle yard partition is up. Also the halt has been made and detailed with passengers and posters. The goods yard is under construction at the moment. Sorry there are no pictures at the moment due to a problem with uploading them, but I'll try and get them up as soon as possible. Tom
