Upgrading a Lima O gauge Diesel shunter

Recommended Posts

Hello there,

I have just acquired a cheap Lima shunter from a popular auction site. I plan to detail and remotor as an industrial shunter to serve Father Jack's Brewery on my Crilly street layout.

Has anyone tried to remotor this model before? If so, what motor did you use?

Also, any idea what prototype the Lima model matches, or close too?

Dougal

It's a continental design with a much heightened cab. There was a thread on it a while back and some pics on t'internet of the real thing. Nowt wrong with the motor, my O Sentinel is powered by one :)

Pack in loads of lead and it'll run like a champ (for a while :)). Thirty plus years ago I had a freelance (Ruston 48DSish) model built on the Class 33 motor bogie which, I believe, is basically the same mech. The body was, to all intents and purposes, a shaped lead block with a plastikard skin. It was a lovely slow runner and surprisingly powerful. However, it had no axle bearings, just holes in the plastic frame, so the axles eventually ate their way up into the chassis and messed up the gear mesh. If you can just put brass or bronze bushes into the existing frames before you ballast it up,, it would be all the improvement you really need to make.

Ok, I think I may have to use my trusty modellers licence to explain the shunter!

Not sure if my shunter runs yet, if not I will probably obtain a motoring unit from PRMRP as they are really easy to build.

Thanks for the responses,

Dougal.

Aha, it has arrived. Dimension wise it's not that far from my class 04. Weight wise, it is a tad light! The satsuma I just had for pudding weighed more.

I suppose I should give it a test run. Not bothered if it doesn't run as I plan to remotor anyway.

If you wish to follow how I upgrade this model, drop in on my Crilly street thread. (Once I have resolved the issue around the size of uploadable images.)

Dougal.
