Catkins
I know that the first twenty 37/5's were allocated to Thornaby depot in the North-east for steel traffic, and were double-headed on coil trains from the north-east to the steelworks at Corby, they were also used on more local, steel industry based, work around the North-East. The 37/9's (all 6 of them) were converted to provide test-beds for the engines that were going to go into the class 60's but I think they were allocated to the Western Region for use on stone trains. I'm sorry that I can't be of anymore help.

Eggesford box
Hi, the 37/9s where regulars on 6M33 0700 Llanwern-Dee Marsh taking over from the class 47s and the load was increased by an extra wagon. Its some time ago and memory plays tricks but IIRC the load was 10 or 11 BBAs. As a signalman at Abergavenny at the time (1983/89) I used to detest the things. According to the drivers no matter what speed you where doing previously, once they hit the bottom of Llanvihangel bank the speed would drop to 20mph and they would just slug the way up the bank at that speed. A 47 with a run would cover the 12 miles to Pontrilas (the next box) in 16 minutes a 37/9 would take over 20 minutes, about 24 minutes if my memory is correct. . Not wishing to be pedantic, but the initial 37/5 conversions came to Canton and were used on South Wales MGR traffic, until the 37/7 series arrived (?), then the 37/5s were transferred to Thornaby. in 1989/1990 37/5s still worked daily to Tidal Sidings, Cardiff on steel workings, as below. . The 37/9 locos were in deed test beds, but not for the Class 60, but for a proposed Class 38 - which never materialised. . In theory they were allocated to the South Wales Metals pool (when they were not awaiting repairs or spares). Brian R.
