RMweb Premium 7013 Posted January 23, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 23, 2014 Hornby news letter showing this as a release, would this be a loco that was pre- design clever I.e will it have bearings in th chassis and wire handrails etc.
robmcg
I cannot imagine they would re-tool it with inferior bearings. Or whatever the 42/52/72XX DoG things are called...
RMweb Premium 31A Posted January 23, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 23, 2014 From the catalogue number quoted on Hatton's web site (R2921) this seems to be a re-run of the first B17 model to be released (same catalogue number, loco number & name), which I bought one of back in December 2012. Possibly one of Hornby's best models; as Rob says, very unlikely they would have re-tooled it. I've never taken mine apart to see what kind of bearings it has, but all handrails are separate wire fittings.
RMweb Premium brushman47544 Posted January 24, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 24, 2014 Since the DC version arrived almost a year ago, it would certainly be interesting to compare this version with the earlier one to see whether the build quality and paint finish is as good, even coming from the same factory. 34theletterbetweenB&D
Hornby news letter showing this as a release, would this be a loco that was pre- design clever I.e will it have bearings in the chassis and wire handrails etc. Haven't torn it apart yet - too busy reducing the J11 to its components - but on a quick inspection it appears to be to the standard of the other three in the recent LNER quartet (B1, L1, O1) didn't get a B17 when first released. It immediately ran sweetly and quietly as received, despite having a Hornby decoder installed - a little granularity in the bottom couple of speed steps but I am sure that is the decoder - and looks good for both paint finish and applied detail. 31/1/14 And it has now had its DC test run - very good - and been fitted with a Lenz Standard, so is dead smooth even at dead slow. Also been in pieces to some extent, now got a correct spacing loco to tender drawbar, a spring on the bogie post and a little more weight along the boiler sides; and a U shaped strip metal bracket over the block to stop the gear idler shaft running out either side until in contact with a driving wheel! Now to go back and test it, to see what if anything needs adjustment to get round a 30" minimum radius now loco and tender are closed up to such good effect. I don't feel the rather strange mouldings representing the intermediate buffers need to be removed, but there may be something to do around - mainly under - the cab step for clearance. This will have to wait though, as I need to go and make a vast mess of the kitchen in order to entertain this evening's guests.
34theletterbetweenB&D
Well, pleasantly surprised, good down to a 24" radius as modified for the loco to tender spacing to be true scale. The loco and tender ensemble have limited looseness on track, so pretty much on the limit at this radius. Laugh a minute time, while being given a little more running it suddenly came to a rather abrupt halt. This was down to the water scoop falling off the tender underside, and part yanking the plug in connector out, (running in reverse at the time). Easily rectified, but it meant that I got a close look at the water scoop. Here's some really superfluous modelling: everything possible represented, including the hinge pins in the actuating mechanism. There's a place I would suggest to save money Hornby, components that are only going to be seen as silhouettes just need to be an outline...
RMweb Premium Andy Hayter Posted February 1, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 1, 2014 Yes but I see a well detailed model as being a bit like a beautiful well dressed young lady. I maybe am not allowed to immediately see all of the bodywork, but it sure is nice to know it's there.
