NERBOB
Hello all, after great success with my DCC sound locos etc I'm stuck on an issue which I hope someone can help with. On my 4MT I'd like the Smoke Unit to operate with the sound on F1, not F5 which is the Coal Shovel sound (Green - Aux1). Please can you help with the programming procedure? Its a ESU Locsound V4 decoder, currently plugged in but can be hardwired if necessary. Tried my books and internet sources but nothing forthcoming as yet..... Many thanks in anticipation Bob
Nigelcliffe
You need to remap the functions to achieve what you want. Good news - it **is** possible. Bad news - it is complicated, and I think it would be very rash to try to change it on a DCC system which cannot read CV values. Very simplest, but requires a LokProgrammer, and the ESU software for the LokProgrammer. Rather expensive option to just change some CV values. Simple, assuming you have a computer interface: JMRI version 3.7.1 (the current test release) has ESU v4 function mapping implemented. Bear in mind this is a test release, and this is a new feature (so stop and think should anything not work as expected). Also JMRI has to read 640 CV's to populate the function mapping table, so will take some time to complete a read. Once the table has been populated through reading, you can find the "mapping line" in the decoder which is currently set to the output "Aux1", remove "Aux1" from that mapping line, and add "Aux1" to the mapping line which is controlling "Sound on/off". If you bought the sound decoder from one of the better custom sound sellers, then they should be able to give you the specific CVs to change. Though its possible to give a guess as to which to change, the options available to the original sound project writer means there isn't a guarantee of which CVs will change which features. If none of the above, then ESU decoder manual, and study the page about "mapping lines" (around page 52). Get your head around it before doing too much (and also setting of the Index CV, CV32). Next, make an intelligent guess as to which mapping lines will contain F1 and F5 keys for your sound project - I'd guess mapping line 7 for F1 and mapping line 11 for F5. You need to read some CVs from the line to confirm you are on the correct line, then move Aux1 from the line containing F5 to the line containing F1. Many thanks in anticipation Bob You need to be very careful about this . . . If the smoke unit is activated at the same time as the sound, it will remain on all the time that sound is on and may well overheat and damage the body of the locomotive! Nigelcliffe
Indeed, that is a good comment about smoke units. Perhaps a better solution might be to map the smoke unit to an un-used function key. - Nigel
