RMweb Gold Metr0Land Posted January 26, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 26, 2014 We've debated on rmweb before the merit or otherwise of the percentage scores in new model reviews in Model Rail. This posting is not about reopening that debate. However I am puzzled by something in the current issue (MR192 Feb2014). In the new product reviews the following locos are scored: Hornby Railroad DoG 81% Heljan AC Railbus 88% Hornby Sentinel Shunter 85% Also wagons/coaches: Bachmann Polybulk 93% GF Sleeper carriage 92% Hornby CCT 88% Bachmann BG 90% The Hornby Duke of Gloucester is listed as Model of the Month. As far as I can see there's no explanation as to just how this is determined. Am I missing something?

Horsetan
Hopefully the process isn't as opaque as the one used by ADAC....

10800
Maybe it's partly due to the perceived impact the model has on the market, and not just the review score.
RMweb Premium Legend Posted January 27, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 27, 2014 Yes I think it's based on what's the most likely to be the most popular, so while the Heljan rail bus scores higher it is unlikely to sell as many as the DoG, assuming Hornby can manufacture them! DoG is likely to be much more popular, although in this case I would say Hornby's Sentinel would have given DoG a run for its money. But at the end of the day as Dibber says it's the editors choice. dibber25
As I said, it's not scientific and it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the wretched scoring system! It's the Editor's choice. One month it might be because it's the model he likes best. Another time it might be because - as in this case it's a big, popular, steam locomotive. It might even be because it's the most novel new model, or because it clearly causes the most public interest. Not everything in life is worked out down to the last detail and justified by endless debate. Sometimes we just do things because we want to.
