GraemeR BR (WR)
Having acquired the stunning Hornby M7 in Malachite Green 242, I'm keen to find some appropriate rolling stock for it for the 1945 to 1948 period. According to Peter Bedding in an archived post, "I believe it to be correct that the post-war painting of M7s in malachite was limited to a handful, used for empty carriage stock workings in and out of Waterloo. They were numbers 242, 243, 676, 30038, 30241, and 30244." I knew few of the locos received this livery at this time. I've used the following website for info on the Hornby coaches. Clearly many of them would be OK for ECS duties, but did 242 gave any branch operations at this time? Even if it didn't, which of the coaches on the website below would be most appropriate. I'm looking at a small 2 or 3 coach combination. http://www.ekmpowershop4.com/ekmps/shops/morrismodels/catherinecheard.sitespawner.com/ekmps/shops/morrismodels/southern-railway-coaches-era-3-334-c.asp Many thanks for any help you can give me. bbishop
According to Don Bradley's book, 242 was a Salisbury locomotive until 1951. Malachite from 12/46 to 04/50. Locomotives were in malachite for publicity purposes and Salisbury used an M7 for station piloting. Bill

If it was based Nine Elms, anything other than ECS workings would have been extremely unlikely because with the exception of the 'Kenny Belle' ALL branch lines close to or within the London area had got 3rd rail and the only time steam traction was seen was on freight / engineering trains. If we widen the scope to Sailsbury depot, then I imagine there would be possibilities however.
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted February 24, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 24, 2014 In 1945-48, many of the Maunsell coaches from Hornby would still be in main-line use, as the new Bulleids were not all available at once - many being built in BR days, of course. This slightly daunting document gives details of coach sets : http://www.semgonline.com/coach/CoachSets.txt
