jessy1692
Just come accross an update on the restoration of the Thomas Green built Barber, the boiler has is now re united with the frames at Alan Keefe's and all seems to be going well, from the article on their facebook page it is planned for Barber to visit its factory (or whats left) in Leeds and then on to display at the Yorkshire show in July before on to Alston for running in before the Gala where Barber will be joined by Harrogate in steam together for the first time together in preservation. Fingers crosed all goes to plan and cant wait to see Barber at the Yorkshire show (if i can sneak off whilst im working there) and at Alston in August. Hope the link embeds for more details. PenrithBeacon
What is the gauge of the engine? Regards
PenrithBeacon
Would it fit into a Welsh loading gauge? Regards
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted March 5, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 5, 2014 Yes, probably even Festiniog if it's width is ok, as it was built to go through a very low bridge on the system. See here for scale against a chap http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VYv6SN5Ut0I/Uj8wwouYh1I/AAAAAAAADSo/cPknVqVi1tg/s1600/DSC_0220.JPG
sir douglas
it probaly would fit the FR loading gauge because the Peckett Harrogate has run on the FR and that is the same loading gauge as Barber
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted March 6, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 6, 2014 The Peckett as built wouldn't fit in some of the tunnels though due to the cab I heard which is part of the reason they didn't make it a priority to rebuild. With the rounded cab Barber probably would much like Russell did in chopped form and Lyd does.
jessy1692
Heard from a good local source Barber is now pretty much finished at Keef's and will hopefully be back in Harrogate on display around 3rd July and then exhibited at the Great Yorkshire Show. Another reason to go! After that up to Alston and a gala to celebrate with the Peckett/Harrogate, first time in steam together in probably 60 years or more! Marshall5
The Peckett as built wouldn't fit in some of the tunnels though due to the cab I heard which is part of the reason they didn't make it a priority to rebuild. With the rounded cab Barber probably would much like Russell did in chopped form and Lyd does. When the Peckett (now 'Harrogate') arrived at the F.R. it had a low, rounded cab like Barber's and would certainly have fitted the FR's loading gauge - the current cab was fitted during its restoration. IIRC the reason it wasn't restored at the time was due to concerns about the boiler's limited steaming capacity. Ray.

Im sure i read somewhere it wasnt used because of the over hang from the pretty short wheelbase causing problems, possibly in tunnels found after towing it dead up the line. jessy1692
So is it gas fired then with that wagon on the back. Definately coal fired, dunno what coal they use but it was some smelly stuff! The wagon has an air compressor in for the brakes, i thought it was a great to see as it is done in the style of the original hoppers that ran on the gas works line, they had gas in big letters painted on. ill post some of my pics up from saturday when i get chance. cheers james
jessy1692
As promised, heres some from Saturday, it was freezing but worth it seeing Barber working and nearly 3 years to the day since i last saw it before work started May 2012: 2015: Fantastic work by the South Tynedale and everyone involved, i never thought id see it run when i saw it at Armley Mills in pieces all them years ago, and certainly never thought id see 2 Harrogate Gas Works locos in steam together. Now to pester RT models to get his kit out! Cheers James
