Torr Giffard LSWR 1951-71
Mornin' all, You'll all be aware that dental bits have to be manufactured to high standards and come in many shapes and sizes but did you know that they are only autoclaved (cleaned) so many times before they are disposed of? Your local dentist can be an excellent source of high quality grinding/shaping bits....and what better way to use something that might once have rattled your head off? See the last scene in this clip for an idea of some of the shapes/sizes available Dave
trisonic
I agree. I had a quick word with my dentist a couple of years ago and she gave me a rather large handful of every shape imaginable (incl. manual probes, which are really incredibly useful) - they only throw them away... Best, Pete.
Pete 75C
If I didn't have an irrational morbid fear of dentists, I'd pop round to the local surgery right away... Useful tip.
JeffP
I asked my dentist and he told me they all went away for re-sharpening.
Torr Giffard LSWR 1951-71
....highly doubtful...autoclaving changes the properties of the metal bit over time...that is why they can only have so many cleaning cycles before being discarded. Ask a different dentist. Dave
JeffP
LOL, I only have one.......
decauville1126
Mine gave me lots of tiny diamond-impregnated bits as well as some of those horrible great things for making large filling cavities. Still using them, the diamond ones being great for grinding brass and steel. Yes, it's difficult to ask as the time but nice to get something back from the NHS! Pete 75C
LOL, I only have one....... Tooth or dentist? Seriously, I agree. How many dentists can one have? I'd think it a bit of a cheek to wander into a surgery I wasn't registered with, especially when "on the scrounge"...
trisonic
They obviously save them for their Private Patients.... Best, Pete.
Torr Giffard LSWR 1951-71
....why not walk into any dentist surgery, explain what you want and why, then offer a donation to the surgery Christmas party fund...a change of mind might then be forthcoming. After all, they probably bin the bits anyway. Dave
JeffP
I might as well buy new ones.
sub39h
I totally agree dental (and medical) instruments are great for modelling. I have a few friends who are dentists and I have a fairly ready supply should I need it.

jazz
I've been using used dentist drills for years. Switching to a private dentist recently he gave be a few boxes of various free samples that reps gave him. They are amazing and have not been in anyones mouth to boot.
