B15nac
Hello I'm hoping someone may be able to help me! Does anyone no what make kit this king could be built from? It's of brass construction. Kind regards Neil
34theletterbetweenB&D
I'd take a punt on that being someone's good effort with the Jamieson kit and Eames parts. Of course it could equally well be a scratchbuild: the kit was a scratchbuild aid. What looks like a Romford Bulldog motor, and the Jackson bogie wheels suggests a mid 70s construction to me. Does it run well?
B15nac
Thanks for your reply! I bought it on eBay a few days ago as I thought it looked good! I have no idea what it's like! An it's not arrived yet. Bit of a shot in the dark!! I have heard of Jamieson but no nothing about them! We're they any good? Cheers Neil
34theletterbetweenB&D
In their day, extremely useful kits. Formed metal sheet - described as nickel silver but there is an opinion that brass sheet was also used - for solder assembly, which were generally the right shape and dimensions for the prototype based on the examples I have seen. Kings Cross/Eames produced a range of mechanical and detail parts to supplement the kit and make it a running model. The great advantage was the thin section of the metal sheet, which meant fewer appearance compromises than the whitemetal kit which was the alternative kit route. Your King certainly looks the part in the photos, someone has worked hard detailing that and giving it a good paint job.The tidy looking construction of the running gear encourages confidence in the likelihood of it working, or readily being got to work well. Was a minimum radius quoted in the description? A build like this is unlikely to have been for a set track layout, it is more likely to be for a minimum radius somewhere in the 24 to 36 inch range. The driving wheels are pretty close in the frame, not a lot of side to side movement available.
B15nac
Sounds good then! I've been told it runs well but those flanges on the wheels look a bit big?!? I don't have tight curves so hopefully it will go round them ok but I'm worried the flanges may get stuck on point work! Regards Neil
34theletterbetweenB&D
Those are Romford wheels, evident by the slotted nut securing them to the axle ends. Mine from that period with Romfords all operate happily unaltered on Peco and kit built code 75 points.
