This is the track plan I've settled on. Very much a trip into the unknown for me. Size is 2000 x 600 mm. 3 left points and 1 y,Code 75 rail. I intend joining the Scale Four Soc. and will also use DCC. The points will be operated via wire and tube under the base boards via SPTD slide switches. Track will be on copper cla sleepers and, I hope, fully inset with continuous check rails. I think I've got a good way of achieving it, especially round the points. All wagons will be 4 wheel and loco's no more the 0-6-0, mostly diesels. All comments are welcome of course. The track plan itself is based on Fawcett Street, found in an old copy of Scale Model Trains.

Looks like a cunning plan. 2000mm is certainly ample for such a plan in P4 giving an extra 2 1/2 feet of length to the original 4 feet

As ever the bigger the fiddle yard area the better.

Maybe the fuel point would look better (less cramped) if it was at the front, rather than between the two tracks?

I've taken the liberty of redrawing your image as I'm guessing there may be copyright issues. I've used AnyRail & Peco code 75.

Thanks for reply mate. I've got the rail and sleeper strip on order now. It will be Scale 4 and the track will be fully check railed. I'm thinking that the front track off the Y will be into a private yard, with the traverser behind it. That has already been fitted and is designed to be tight. Think Pugs, Dock Shunters, Sentinels + 5 wagons. That's it. Decided points will be worked with wire and tube and loco's DCC. A guy at the local club has offered to help with the track but I think the points will be a challenge due to the check rails. I have an idea about how to build a reliable layout. Hope it works.

Interesting comments there folks. I will give it some thought. The fuelling point wouldn't be anything fancy, just a shed with a couple of oil drums. No fancy pumps for these guys. Fuel dispensed courtesy of Isaac Newton!

Due to being unable to get the required wheels in a reasonable time scale, I'm now going back to OO gauge. I already had the gauges ordered from C+L for S4. However, these would not now be needed. I phoned C+L to order a set of OO Gauges and they told me that my order had not yet gone out and they would change the gauges for me. Result. Well done C+L. Excellent service.

It seems a shame that you have been put off trying P4 because of one(?) manufacturers production planning, which is secondary to their main business. Depending on your skill or support level there are other alternatives.

Are you still going to hand build your track using code 75?

  • 4 weeks later...

Track laying has commenced on Fosdyke Yard. OO gauge, Code 75 phosphor bronze rail. As the track will be buried,I've only put sleepers in about 3" apart. Looks a bit weird. I'll build my points using Don Borehams method as it sounds easy to do. I've also got to fit continues check rails as well,so I'll have to build the track twice effectively. I must be mad. Dead easy to get some Peco and slap it down but not as much fun.
