Tom Husband
Hi all, I recently travelled from Newcastle to Haltwhistle by train and noticed a siding/loop between Hexham and Carlisle that featured several strange signals all facing the same direction. They had round heads with lights all the way round the circumference but were not displaying any aspect at all and the rails looked as though they had seen minimal use. Can anyone explain what this mysterious siding and signalling was/is used for?
RMweb Gold big jim Posted April 13, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 13, 2014 dont know the siding you are on about but it sounds like a 'toton' signal used for setting back/drawing forward trains, mainly seen in collieries and power stations etc anything like the ones in this thread? http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/67638-totoncreep-indicators-anyone-tried-diy/
RMweb Gold DaveF Posted April 13, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 13, 2014 If it was just before you went through the short tunnel before you arrived at Haltwhistle it would be the remains of the rapid coal loader at Melkridge. If it is there then this is a link to an earlier thread on the subject. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/22487-melkridge-sidings/ Note: The link to the photos in the last post of this topic no longer works, they are now at Ernie's site below. There are some photos of it on Irishswissernie's flickr site at: https://www.flickr.com/search/?w=45127721@N05&q=melkridge David Edited as I missed out the link on RMWeb. RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted April 14, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 14, 2014 There was one of those not so far away - at the entry to the Jarrow oil terminal, on the curved bridge over the tyne tunnel entrance (south).
