Torr Giffard LSWR 1951-71
Aft'noon all, Some of you will be aware of my work with Ultrascale re Dapol class 22, Western and Beattie Well tank P4 wheelsets. This time I'm more ambitious....the Ulrascale wheelsets for the Hornby West Country pacific are progressing slowly but surely and I'd like to be able to pair these potentially excellent wheelsets with a superb Brassmasters EasiChas undercarriage to produce what should be a first rate loco. Nothing will encourage Ultrascale and Brassmasters more than to have a group of punters waving money around and demanding these products. I'm happy to coordinate the project in the same way that I did for the Beattie well tank but whilst I'm chatting to the the two manufacturers, it would be good to start gathering expressions of interest. No prices available yet...early days. Two of us already have money ready and waiting for 6 chassis/wheelset packs. Dave

I'm interested in the Bulleid wheelsets, but need 1/8" axles for the drivers, not 3mm, so I don't think this would suit your purposes. Out of interest, what happened to the Beattie Well Tank P4 pack in the end? I seem to recall the potential cost of it was quite high, due to the method employed, which must have frightened quite a few people.
Torr Giffard LSWR 1951-71
Aft'noon H, I have the prototype chassis...which will be running on TG once some track goes down and I'll be sending my second loco for the same conversion soon. Ultrascale will carry out the same conversion for anyone at around £230 per loco. Dave
Horsetan
....Ultrascale will carry out the sameconversion for anyone at around £230 per loco. Ah....that's the bit which will frighten a few. Hopefully the Bulleid wheels might work out at a bit less than that! I've seen the tool for one of the BFB carrying wheels, but not the drivers. Torr Giffard LSWR 1951-71
...I think that you're right H but once you attempt niche model P4 conversions like the well tank then you need deeper pockets. I would have wasted much more of my time and probably ended up with a non-running chassis going any other route....and I would put a price on that wasted time. Horsetan
...I think that you're right H but once you attempt niche model P4 conversions like the well tank then you need deeper pockets..... True, but it does put a P4 Beattie beyond reach, for practical purposes, and I'm not sure that a replacement Comet-style chassis would be possible either. Yours might turn out to be the only one (or two!), but at least you got what you wanted in the end. The original RTR is a very unfriendly model for the wider gauges and one might almost say it was deliberately engineered that way.
Torr Giffard LSWR 1951-71
True H...but once modellers see TG with 2 well tanks running then hands may dip into pockets. Dave
Horsetan
....hands may dip into pockets. Hands have technically dipped into pockets for various BR Standard wheels (I'm one of those in the queue; ask Dave Franks), but I don't think we're going to see these coming out of Ultrascale much before 2016. Only one man available to do the development and tooling, which is another problem entirely.
