Gary_Leeds
Looking back over an old issue of MR I noticed that they used to offer a years worth of issues on CD (in 2004). Did anyone ever get one and how long were they doing this for? Also should anyone have any CDs of Model Rail issues (or any other magazines that did the same sort of thing pre digital app days) that they want to sell can you let me know, it will save me having to scan my copies in and buy back issues for scanning Thanks Gary

It was a service offered by an outside company and I think it only lasted a couple of years. I guess with the other digital developments that overtook it so quickly, it went the way of Betamax videos. CHRIS LEIGH

CHRIS LEIGH It's only really come about for me as I am moving house and I have several large heavy boxes full of various rail and computing magazines and after getting them down from the loft I'm thinking I really wish these were on a DVD lol. It would be nice to have a PDF file that can be searched rather than just a jpg scan of a page, but its better than nothing and there is the article index I can refer back to. On the subject of videos, Model Rail also did videos as well.

RMweb Gold Red Fox Posted May 10, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 10, 2014 I would buy a DVD Rom or a CD Rom of back issues I have a cupboard full of magazines I have the same issue and the cupboard is getting towards capacity. I never knew Model Rail was avalible on disks and I've been a reader since day 1. I'd buy a full set of disks to replace my paper copies if they became avalible. GordonC
We still do 'video programmes' in the form of DVDs - see the ad on page 143 of the current issue. I think its more the reduction in storage space and the ease of finding articles in a big stack of several years of magazines that would be the attraction to buy electronic copies of old issues
RMweb Premium kevinlms Posted May 12, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 12, 2014 I think its more the reduction in storage space and the ease of finding articles in a big stack of several years of magazines that would be the attraction to buy electronic copies of old issues There are two parts of the equation. A need of a good index to find the article(s) in question - perhaps in more than one title, i.e. Railway Modeller & Model Railways, then a way to download the article(s) thus located. I wouldn't expect this to be a free service. Someone somewhere, needs to be able to scan & make available to the hobby, WITH the copyright owners consent and with the option of payment. faulcon1
I had Model Rail DVD's 1 to 17 on video and put the layouts onto 3 seperate DVD's and the "how to" articles onto another DVD and the disposed of the VHS tapes. I still have somewhere one of the DVD's that arrived with a magazine which was a compilation of articles in the magazine. I too used to subscribe but over the years the magazine paper HAS got thinner and thinner to such a point whereby I was getting ripped magazines posted to me. So I unsubscribed and now just buy the odd one from the local newsagent. Sure I could have requested a replacement but as that would also be posted there is every likely chance that it too would have been ripped on the way to me. These magazines along with others are not treated like the "crown jewels" by the postal services.

We don't, as a rule, get complaints about torn copies from UK subscribers so don't let it put you off subscribing - and the paper thickness has been the same for a very long time although it was thicker in the very early days. faulcon1
Yes dibber25 this poster does indeed live on the other side of the world. But we now have (or so we are constantly told) a global economy. I also no longer send locos for sound fitment to the UK after getting locos like a Hornby King returned to me with the body forceably detached from the chassis. It doesn't seem to matter if the people who fit sound decoders put many "fragile handle with care" stickers on the carton as the postal services just throw them about. It seemed to me that with the thin womans magazine glossy paper that copies of MR magazine come with it just wouldn't survive the journey to my side of the world singly, and it was better to buy it at the local newsagent as the magazine comes to them bundled with other magazines. Also I can puruse the magazine before I buy to see if anything in it grabs my attention as I do with other British modelling magazines.

Also I can puruse the magazine before I buy to see if anything in it grabs my attention. I get my copies of MR put aside at the newsagent & usually no trouble with their condition. I did have one copy go missing for 3 months and they eventually found it. It had been living in their rack under the "Mc" section, instead of the "M". RMweb Gold lakeview770 Posted September 24, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 24, 2014 I also live on the other side of the world and occasionally I get a damaged copy of Hornby magazine (my only paper subscription) and living where I do I just accept that my magazine may get damaged. Ive never had one damaged so badly that you can’t read it, its usually a damaged spine. As for purchasing other items and having sent by mail I’ve worked out which retailers I can and cannot trust. But even my digital editions can mess up, I just downloaded a back issue of Model Rail this morning and pages are missing, I have content from the edition after (iirc) this particular edition so even digital media isn’t infullable (to quote Holly from Red Dwarf). Here in the US Model Railroader magazine has been offering DVD’s of all its back issues at a reasonable price and it appears to be popular.
