Tom Husband
Hi all, apologies for the ignorance but what wagons were used for the conveyance of tar from the late 60s to early 90s, assuming tar was still rail-borne by this time... Any help gratefully appreciated
br2975
Hi all, apologies for the ignorance but what wagons were used for the conveyance of tar from the late 60s to early 90s, assuming tar was still rail-borne by this time... Any help gratefully appreciated Try these for a start - IIRC Thomas Ness was a subsidiary of the NCB (National Coal Board) and their plant was in Caerphilly. . In the early to mid-1970s the plant was served by a trip from Radyr, up the 'big hill' to Aber Jct and reverse - and then via Caerphilly Tunnel, Cardiff Queen St/Central on the return. Also served in the late 70s by an extension of the Ellesmere Port - Hereford service. http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/thomasness Brian R.

Fat Controller
http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/ncbtankwagons links to photos of some of the last survivors of coal tar tankers. Bitumen (derived from oil) tanks are still in use, the surviving service being one to Preston Docks from Humberside. Ironic that there should be examples preserved at Cynheidre, as coal tar was noticeably absent from anthracite..
