Bachmann DCC Sound fitted locos and eLink (newbie question)

Please be gentle; idiots guide needed!

Ok, so after being an avid railway modeller from the age of 5 till 17 (and discovering girls) I've jumped back in at the deep end at the age of 43 with an e-link set up.  I bought the "Western Master" Hornby set as a cheap way of testing the waters and after 2 days and 3 computers finally got the bloody thing to work properly.

So far so good.  However, I went to my local model railway shop yesterday (the excellent Signal Box in Anstey, Leics) and bought two DCC fitted Bachmann locos, one of them (a class 20) also having sound.  I can control the movement of both using the settings for the GWR Pannier Tank which comes with the "Western Master" set.

My two questions are this:

1) How do I program each loco into Railmaster so I can control each function, and operate the loco correctly according to the appropriate settings (e.g. speed).  Obviously only Hornby locos are programmed into Railmaster by default.

2) Once I've programmed each one will the sound just happen automatically when I use the class 20?  I've never had a loco with sound!

An idiots guide is needed.  I've looked on here and can't find the answer.

Hi Jake,

Select any diesel loco within RailMaster loco set up page, you can insert your own pictures into the program folder with in Railmaster but that doesn't matter at this stage.

Once you've selected a suitable loco(you could stick with the Panier tank for that matter) it won't have any function buttons assigned, there is a button at the bottom of the window to the left of the red cross.

Press this once will bring up a set of default sounds, I think the first press is steam sounds.

Press again and you will get a set of diesel sounds, press again and it will be another set of diesel sounds.

Just scroll through and pick the best list that matches the functions to your loco.

Once selected press the tick button to accept this loco.

When you select this loco for operation you should get the function buttons to appear with the sounds listed, pressing these will activate the sounds, they should match up OK to the list you get with the loco.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Ian

EDIT:- Just noticed there is a Class 20 that you can select within Railmaster!

Select this and select the address that you want to use.

Then press that blue button with thw two arrows on it, first press is Steam 1, then Steam 2 then Diesel 1 then Diesel 2.

You will see some of the function have been ticked, just look at the function list that comes with the loco and tick the ones that are required. You can rename them as well if they don't match up.

No problems.

Just reading the manual and it does limit the number of function in that set up screen to 6 only that can be ticked???

No idea why they've limited it to 6 have sent a question to them though.

Apparently Diesel set 2 is for Bachmann Locos!

Ian,

Yeah, had read that Diesel 2 was for Bachmann.

The locos were second hand without boxes or paperwork!  Are the functions the same for every loco with the same chip?  If so, is this what I need (I believe Bachmann 20034 has a 3.5 Loksound chip).

This list seems to say so.

No I can't find a list of the the function numbers and what they do either!

Best send an email to Bachmann and get them to send you one.

In railmaster you have selected the Class 20(even though it's Hornby it wont make any difference)

You have selected the address and made sure it is the actual address of the loco, which you must have done for it to move forwards/backwards

On the loco control window that has the slider on it, it does show the name and fucntion buttons doesn't it?

Pressing F1 should turn on the sound.

I don't have anything set up at the minute to test it, but will try and have a look into it.

You have heard the sounds working correctly though at some point on this loco?

Cheers

Excellent, also this is from my Bachmann Class 24 sound onboard loco may help!

F0:- Loco directional Lighting (LATCH)

F1:- Sound on/off (LATCH)

F2:- SIngle Horn (TRIGGER)

F3:- Double Horn(TRIGGER)

F4:- Fan(LATCH)

F5:- Notch Up (TRIGGER)

F6:- Notch Down (TRIGGER)

F7:- Shunting speed/no inertia on/off (LATCH)

F8:- Loco cab lighting where fitted (LATCH)

F9:- Buffer action (TRIGGER)

F10:- Coupling Sound (TRIGGER)

Also just a note I tested the ticks, the maximum of 6 is for the first 6 buttons that are shown on the loco control panel, all functions are working, the tick is just to select which of those functions will be displayed in the minimised loco control pane.

Cheers

Yes you will need to change the address of each loco, so that each has it's own address.

The RailMaster manual does indeed tell you how to do this.

I would connect a bit of track directly to the Prog track outputs of the E-Link and place each loco in turn on to this, then follow the instructions to give each loco a new address.

Once this is done remember that in the Loco set up page you will need to make sure the loco ID address matches the new address you have just given each loco.

Good luck.

Cheers
