Orgreave Colliery Junction NCB 0-6-0DS approaching Jan 79 C4332

The loco is one of the Yorkshire Engine Co 'Janus' 0-6-0 DEs, shortly to be modelled by Golden Valley Hobbies, though sadly not in green livery.

Was this the previous photo? (the caption suggests it was taken afterwards, though the rake of hoppers seem to be exactly the same)

Not really a balanced account is it?  But then I thought Politics was a no go on here?

Sorry but I was merely providing a reference to the place, no politics intended, and as such I made no further comment. It is infamous whichever side of the political divide you stand on and most likely the best (unfortunately), maybe the only thing that the site will be remembered for.

If it's deemed inappropriate can the mods please remove it.

Sorry to divert from yet more of Dave's excellent photos.

.

Not intended to be a political statement either, just observations of someone who was thereabouts in 1984-1985

Orgreave could be interpreted as the start of Arthur Scargill's decline, and confirmation of his "arrogance".

.

When calling the strike, he brought his men out in the spring (when the warmer weather was coming), when coal stocks were the highest on record, and he overlooked the fact that (because of Brixton, Toxteh, St.Paul's etc) the police were better organised, equipped and trained since Saltley in 1972.

The product of the BSC Orgreave ovens was shipped to steel plants with deep water wharves, where previously stockpiled coke (in anticipation) was shipped in from the continent, so the lorry convoys were unnecessary, and nothing but a distraction.

.

Had Arthur deployed his men in/around the power stations along 'Megawatt Valley' the outcome of the dispute may have been different - AND it follows, many of those pickets arrested at Orgreave would never have experienced the inside of a police cell..

Do I take it that the colliery had a coking plant by it - or are they mining coke as well as treacle in Yorkshire?

There was indeed a coke works, the ovens closed in 1990.

Wikipedia page:   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orgreave_Colliery

I've no idea how accurate that information is.

I can't find anything else really useful on the web about it.

Yup, that's about it. There were quite a few in the area; https://www.flickr.com/photos/dodger5450/11500952853/lightbox/

When I were a lad (groan), the orange glow in the sky came from these things and not streetlights.

One of the by products from the Smithywood plant (above) was Izal disinfectant, and presumably the hard glazed toilet paper, which was shipped out in special vans;

Rotherham Corporation Transport buses had a specific destination 'Izal Factory' which was a workers service variant on route 16 Rotherham to Chapeltown.

Newton Chambers making Coke(Not Car Carriers):

and plenty of Izal "product placement" in this film. probably a Newton Chambers promo film.

Hi, Dave. A great set of photos from Petts Wood this afternoon. In C5023, the unit coupled behind the class 423 looks like a class 414 from the toilet in the first car, and blue livery.

Good to see the stores unit in the last photo.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

I have a few pictures of Orgreave,  taken when I quickly popped into the site one Sunday - "quick before a manager sees you"
