A first batch from the missing photos.  To start with they will be ones originally posted between 1st May 2014 and 11th July 2015 - some 3060 images in all.  They will not be in the original order, that would be far too complicated to do.

I cannot guarantee to post two sets of photos every day, there may be days with only "new" or only "old photos".

Today's were taken at Lanceaster in 1972.  At that time I was living in Manchester, just coming to the end of my student days after completing a degree in Biology in 1971, I did my PGCE which took a further year to qualify me to teach.  I left Manchester in June 1972.

Lovely selection David, every shot is priceless. I particularly like C957 and C959. I don't think I'll have seen these before, so first time for me - many thanks for deciding to repost the lost ones, a task I'm sure no one envies but we are all grateful for.

In C960, 1M35 denotes the 1340 Glasgow Central to London Euston.

How handy were headcode displays to future photo admirers? ;)

Lovely shots Dave, thanks for sharing them - a local one for me Kilsby Tunnel and I drive through it regularly. I've walked the entire length of it a few times on ballast jobs and it's quite spooky if you're on your own!

J836. A lovely shot. 6 wheel Eastern Region BZ behind the loco and the usual ubiquitous SR vans as well. Timeless.

Regards

Guy

And the mix of liveries!

And the Inspection Saloon with 37418 is 975025 'Caroline', the former SR General Manager's Saloon. It now just works with Blue-Star MU fitted locos, whereas originally it had the SR high-level pipes for working with EMUs and cl.33/1 & 73.

Good evening, David. That’s a great set of the missing photo’s of Kilsby Tunnel. In J4368, with a class 85 on a down parcels train, in June, 1975, you have a great example of a short parcels working, which most people should be able to fit onto their layouts.

The new Ulgham Lane crossing photo’s are excellent, and in J12056, with 37358, on an up light engine movement, in July, 1991, I am wondering if that man, on the right, with a camera, on a tripod, is yourself, David. I can see that it was your Dad who took the photo’ you have posted.

Finally, that is a lovely two photo’s of Newsham Plessey Road, with 37418, on a down inspection saloon from earlier today in the afternoon. The large double arrow looks just a bit ‘thin’. Perhaps it’s my old, tired eyes. But it’s certainly good to see that 37 pushing Caroline.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Rob,

J12056.  Yes it is me, wrestling with my video camera and my car is in the shot as well.

Really great to see the Swiss pics. I knew about the Blonay-Chamby line but never managed to visit it even though we went through one of the terminal stations on the MOB (or was it the funicular line up the local mountain to Rochers du Naye,, being marketed as the Marmot line when we visited)?

And nice to be reminded that it wasn't only Deltics on the ECML.

C1744 is, I'm pretty certain, 55 020 "NIMBUS". The number is almost legible when zoomed, the nameplate is the right length, there is a white "DL" experiment plaque to the lower left of the leading cab door which corresponds with other photos of that loco in 1974 and, additionally, I found a photo from later in the year where the dent at the top of the nose had been filled but was still (just) visible.

Can anybody provide any more information on C1742? I'm not familiar with 1L11 and, unfortunately, for most of that summer, I was "off the road". The only reference in my notes for 1974 has 47 471 at the head of 1L11. I don't recognise the headcode but I'm wondering (given that it's Mk. Is) if it was the summer Saturdays King's Cross - Scarborough, which was normally a class 40 diagram. TIA.

Beautiful pictures, Dave. As always, I love anything that takes me back to my teenage stamping ground around that period. The Swiss photos are fascinating, also - not areas that I managed to get to.

Time now for this afternoon's "new" photos.

Today we have a look at three Swiss metre gauge railways, probably not amongst the better known to those who live in the UK.

The first photo shows a train on the preserved line from Blonay to Chamby.   Prior to preservation the loco had been owned by SBB used on the Brünig line and later by the BAM (Biere Apples Morges).

The second photo shows a train on the Chemins der fer Electriques Veveysans (CEV), now a part of the MOB group.

The tremaining photos show La Givrine, a small station on the Nyon St. Cergue Morez line which lies to the north of Geneva.  It now runs from Nyon (on Lake Geneva/ Lac Leman) to La Cure on the border with France but it used to run to Morez in France.  It has been modernised since these photos were taken.

While hurrying to take these photos before the trains moved I put my sunglasses on the car roof.  Sadly they were still there when I drove off, never to be seen again.

La Givrine NStCM ABDe4/4 1on inspection train & ABDe4/4 11 La Cure to Nyon 15th Aug 78  J6304  No 1 was built in 1916, Number 11 in 1918  so they were only around 60 years old when photographed.  Both these railcars still exist, they were sold to the Chemin de Fer de la Mure, in France in 1982 and 1992 respectively.

A lovely set of photos, David. All so interesting to British eyes.

I have heard of the Blonay-Chamby, I'm not 100% on the others but I've come across a wide variety of Swiss lines through the MITV series Swiss Railway Journeys which used to air on the Travel Channel on Sky about 10 years ago or so until it was taken over.

I believe the production company has subsequently released the entire series of 24 episodes on YouTube subsequently for anyone to enjoy.

Good evening, David. The ‘old photo’s’ of Hougham, on the ECML between Grantham and Newark, are full of historical interest, and in C1743, with an unidentified class 47, on an up express passenger train in August, 1974, you can see several vertical streaks on the visible bodyside. That would be a good weathering project.

The ‘new’ Switzerland photo’s are truly excellent, starting with that preserved line from Blonay to Chamby, and then the Chemins der fer Electriques Veveysans (CEV), with finally the station of La Givrine, on the Nyon St. Cergue Morez line. In that first photo’ at Blonay, with a Blonay to Chamby train, with ex Brunig & ex BAM, Ed3/3, number 6, on the 5th August, 1978, your Dad has captured a superb scene of the train with the large tree covered hill in the background.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

According to the workimng timetable on the napier chronicles web site it is a Kings X to Scarborough working, running  8/6 to 31/08 Saturdays only, 11.10 from Kings X.

A KX-Scarborough 'holiday Saturdays' train sounds a bit weird to me, being more used to umpteen trains there from Scotland or the provincial regions. But there must've been a market for Londoners etc looking beyond Margate & the South Coast for their hollybags! 🙂

Possibly a continuation of sorts of the erstwhile "Scarborough Flyer"?

Thanks, David. I didn't think of looking at Chronicles of Napier for it, as it was usually a class 40 diagram (although I do, vaguely, remember seeing a Deltic on it, once).  🙄

There was a King's Cross - Skegness summer Saturdays, as well, which still ran well into the mid-1980s, usually a Class 31. IIRC, the Scarborough service was withdrawn before the end the 1970s (with the HST timetable of 1978, I think).

Really great to see Chesterfield before it was rebuilt. I have travelled to/from/through it often in recent years but not nearly as interesting.

Many thanks for all your work every day (almost). I wondered if it would be too hot today.
