Dapol Pug kit

Recommended Posts

The first kit I ever built was the Dapol 0-4-0 Pug I was about 13 or 14 at the time. A couple of weeks ago I was in my local model shop when the kit caught my eye.

when I got it home, I dug out my original model, I was rather suprised to realise I had done such a good job of it considering it was my first time.

Anyway moving on to the kit itself for such an old moulding it makes a very nice model, however I decided to improve it by removing the moulded handrails, lamp irons and the coupling hooks. then when looking at photos of the prototype I noticed in every photo the locos had dumb buffers so I decided to replace the buffers. I went to the York show a couple of days later and while buying the bits I needed I stumbled across a turned brass chimney for the pug. on I set to work the next day. here are some photos of the work in progress and the finished model alongside my original model for comparison

That brass chimney would be from Model Signal Engineering - they're the only ones to supply any detail for the ex-L&Y Pug.

There's not a great deal of room to shoehorn a motor and gearbox in the Dapol kit, especially if you want bevel-and-spur like I do.
