bubbles2
I've just bought a Hornby 08 shunter on Ebay, unfortunately it appears to be DCC fitted and one of the wires has become disconnected. It looks like one of the white wires (There are 2, although the one that is disconnected has a slight pink tinge) from the chip has nowhere to go as there are 9 wires on the chip and 8 pins on the plug. Also when starting from a slow speed it is a little indecisive as to which direction it wants to go, but runs the opposite way to my other locos when it makes up its mind. I guess the best thing to do is just get a blanking plate and fit that as I am not DCC. Any advise or explanations would be gratefully received. smokebox
The disconnected wire is probably the fourth function output wire, which should be purple, and it is normal for it to be unconnected as there are only 8 pins on the DCC plug and 9 wires from the decoder. It will be best to insulate the end or cut it off to ensure it doesn't cause a short circuit by accidental contact with anything else. As it is, it should run on dc assuming that dc running hasn't been disabled in CV29 of the decoder. In the long term it may be better to fit a blanking plug. [/url]">http:// The decoder appears to be a Hornby R8249 so the loco will run with the decoder in, but not well, and will likely be jerky in reverse. The reason it runs opposite direction to your other locos is because the decoder 8 pin plug has been installed the wrong way around. The orange wire on the plug should align with the white triangle on the board. As you say, the best solution is to replace it with an eight pin blanking plug. bubbles2
Thanks for your replys Smokebox and Retro_man. I have removed the chip, linked across under the dcc socket with soldered wires and a little bit of lubrication, she runs sweet as a nut now, no more indecisive which way shall I go on starting and runs in the same direction as all my other locos.
