RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted June 1, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 1, 2014 I am planning a small industrial layout. The main part of which would be a rail served timber processing plant, raw materials (chipped wood, raw timber) in and finished products (chipboard and plywood) out. The layout would be set in the UK 1975-1990. What sort of rolling stock apart from the obvious OTA's would be required? The layout will be a compact one and an OTA would be about the largest wagon possible.
br2975
Railway owned VGA vans, ( or hired in VTG bogie vans ) to distribute the sheet products e.g. ply, MDF or laminate flooring ?. . Tank wagons to bring in the resins used for bonding the woodchips etc together during the manufacturing processes. . Brian R
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted June 1, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 1, 2014 Thanks Brian. What sort of wagons would be used for bringing in wood chip?
chriswild
I'm pretty sure cargowaggons of either the bogie or twin type have been used to import chip via the channel tunnel to barrow or Workington? In the past for a paper mill there, no idea how its loaded into them though, large bags, be a bit messy otherwise! Chris

The only problem is that it is a micro layout and finding room to fit even a single Cargowaggon in.
br2975
Thanks Brian. What sort of wagons would be used for bringing in wood chip? Logs, brought in by OTA would be the most likely. . However, it's your layout so why not have a short term hire with someone to bring wood chips in in box wagons ? . Brian R

In the past for a paper mill there, no idea how its loaded into them though, large bags, be a bit messy otherwise! Chris Iggesund at Workington and Kimberley Clark at Barrow both received wood pulp (not woodchip) in cargowaggons.
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted June 2, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 2, 2014 Thanks everybody. Just one last question, what sort of tanks would be used for resin and what branding would they have?
Mark Saunders
There was a small fleet of BRT/Procor TTA's for Resin that worked on Speedlink from Duxford to Hexham and is one of the recent liveries from Bachmann follow this link http://Bachmann.co.uk/image_box.php?image=images1/branchline/37-584.jpg&cat_no=37-584&info=0&width=600&height=314 Mark Saunders

JohnH
OBA's could also be used to bring in round timber. There was also limited use of OCA's on timber traffic during the later part of your chosen period.
