BR Maroon coach number transfers - What colour?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Could anyone recommend a manufacturer's transfers or advise me as to what colour numbering I should be using when modelling BR maroon coaching stock?

Looking on producers websites, such as Modelmaster, it would seem that they are recommending yellow numbers. I have previously used Modelmaster yellow numbers on crimson stock and it doesn't look quite right to me.

Looking at some RTR coaches (Bachmann Mk1s) the numbering is more  cream in colour (on both maroon & crimson/cream).

So what is correct?

What do people use and recommend?

Thanks.

Thanks for the response and apologies for the delay in replying.

I've just got off the phone to Fox and they recommend what they call 'old gold' for maroon coaches (and late crimson/cream and western region chocolate/cream - early crimson cream was metallic gold)

Old gold is a deep yellow colour (according to website).

So not quite the same as the RTR colours it would seem (although Bachmann choc/cream MK1s do have yellow lettering).

Looking at some of the models pictured here by accomplished coach builders such as Larry Goddard and Tony Wright would appear to show they use yellow numbering.

But period colour pictures in albums seem to show something more akin to cream (although I know old colour transparencies can't always be relied on for exact shade reproduction).

So I think unless anyone comes back with evidence to the contrary I will be going with Fox's recommendation and placing an order for some of their old gold number sets.

Brian, I think the other cream colour was described as 'Straw.'  I've had both suggested to me as appropriate on Maroon - I think it's Bob 65B who's the guru on this topic, but I won't quibble in substance with Heather's recommendation.
