wollastonblue
I have googled, and checked on here. I'm after information on how to construct my backscene. I have got the backscene I want use, but I am unsure of the materials to use, and how to do it? I have initially thought of using some Polystyrene sheets that I have, as they would be nice and light for my pasting table baseboard, but I see lots of people using hardboard. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
bbishop
I suppose it depends on the amount of (mis)use. I use 9mm ply on an exhibition layout that has to be manoeuvred in and out of a hatchback. The risk with polystyrene would be the damage caused by a flying elbow. Hardboard may well be a viable option. Bill
wollastonblue
I won't be exhibiting my layout. It is permanent in my railway room sons nursery. So I was looking at either the polystyrene sheets I have or getting some hardboard cut for the job.
michaelp
White hardboard looks good but it is a bit more expensive than the other stuff.
darren01
Also hardboard wraps like mad if not braced, i would go with ply 9mm. Darren01

wollastonblue
Thank you to all you replies, I was thinking of Hardboard, or Ply. But how and what do I brace it with?
RhBBob
Thank you to all you replies, I was thinking of Hardboard, or Ply. But how and what do I brace it with? I have used thin strips of wood, 20 mm x 20 mm, usually obtained from B&Q or Homebase and sold in 900 mm lengths. Yes quite pricey so if you can get longer lengths in your vehicle it will work out cheaper. Basically I make a frame plus verticals at, say, two foot intervals. Adjoining sections use a small extension on each side to keep them aligned. I have also used cheap lengths of timber from a local car boot/market man but at £2 for an 8 foot length, the quality will vary !! I buy larger sections and split them using a table saw. RhBBob
PS I have also used the bendy MDF from B & Q and found it extremely useful and easy to fit.
