JohnH
Just seen this nice photo on the web of a class 26 at Thurso in 1979 http://www.flickr.com/photos/46402643@N05/4292885869 and noticed 1 or possibly 2 OBA's parked up in the sidings. What traffic to Thurso were they used on at this time? Many thanks for any help.

They look as though they may have 'big bags' of fertliser in them- certainly something large and white is obscuring part of the inside end of the wagon. Ben Alder
Yes, fertiliser bags.
JohnH
Thanks for the replies gents. I remember seeing a photo in an old 'Model Railways Constructor' (I think?) of three or more OAA's parked in a siding somewhere along the Far North line (could have been Lairg?) and all were loaded with 'Big Bag' fertiliser for use by the Forestry Commission. Aparently they were applied to forest plantations by being dropped from a helicopter... Just notoced another interesting one from Thurso http://www.flickr.com/photos/124043344@N04/13927469157 This one shows two VDA's in the sidings - would these have been on fertiliser traffic as well? Thanks again.

In the Speedink era seed potatoes were dispatched from some Scottish locations, in the Perth area I think, may these have been for seed potatoes as well? cheers

Might it be traffic for Douneray?
Ben Alder
No, not seed potatoes- can't recall what the traffic could have been, but I'll ask around. Still incline towards fertiliser though....
RMweb Gold Scottish Modeller Posted July 2, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 2, 2014 Hi all, A vague memory stirs - from something I read.... I think there was some article regarding slaked lime being moved by rail to the far north for soil improvement - or that's the bit I seem to recollect. Thanks
