When were colour lights erected at Winwick Jcn WCML?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am trying to date a photo taken by the late Jim Carter who was notorious for not recording details of date or even location of his 1960-70 shots.

On this one of Winwick (just south of Winwick Jcn box) the distant appears to be being replaced with colour lights -see photo.

Can some helpful soul confirm a date for this?

Cheers Tony

It's Winwick Quays up slow and up fast distant viewed from Watery Lane bridge - I think the slow line remained as a semaphore until the end (1972) or certainly near to the end. The colour light looks to be an LMS structure, however it may be the old semaphore with a colour light head, but it was certainly a colour light by the mid 1960s from other photos I've seen and I think it was probably converted in the 1950s

All I can say is that it is very definitely pre MAS (which was commissioned in September 1972).

If its the shot im thinking of its a colour shot and its hauled by a black 5

No its not a colour shot, but is hauled by 45081 the one that had the self weighing tender in the mid 1960s.  Jim took many many shots here - all superbly in focus and well composed.

The VW campers were right behind the tender so no more details are available.

From Beasts info it looks like I was wrong and it is not a replacement colour light.

Cheers Tony
