No available class 31,37,47 for

Recommended Posts

Cancelled, though North Wales coast Tractor diagrams got rather more interesting when no heat examples were used.

Besides with the fleet sizes your talking of, the inability to find at least one 31, 37 or 47, is much more unlikely than using a 60 (for which the driver would need to be signed off on).

Andrew,

Are you asking if Class 60 locos were used instead of Class 31, 37 and 47 to haul trains to Blackpool, Southport or Barrow even though they aren't fitted with electric train heating?

That's probably the Regional Railways North-West day. 60095, pair of 20's, pair or 26's borrowed from a railtour and a couple of other locos operated Manchester-Barrow services for the day. I travelled Arnside-Preston on the return working for 60095.

EDIT - found more info at six bells junction

Cheers,

Mick

The main thing that might preclude a Class 60 being used on any passenger service is its 60mph top speed and relatively low rate of acceleration; hardly ideal to maintain even a semblance of a timetable.

They can accelerate well with lightweight passenger loads, but as you say, the 60mph is a hindrance and that was shown on the RR NW day when it was on time to Carnforth and then simply lost out on the WCML to Preston.

Cheers,

Mick

Hi Andrew,

Please see these links

1) 60095. Note the second man in the drivers cab. I would guess that the driver signed (was passed to drive) for class 60's, whilst the second man signed the route. http://davemcalone.zenfolio.com/p228429974/h5ce7afa0#h5ce7afa0

2) 37706. As above http://davemcalone.zenfolio.com/p228429974/h592f0166#h592f0166

3) 2 x class 20 http://davemcalone.zenfolio.com/p228429974/h592f0772#h592f0772

These where all 25th April 1992, and as newbryford says it was a RRNW day. At this time there were 3 return services in and out of Barrow in Furness, all diagrammed for a class 31/4, In fact the same one did all day. It started out from Manchester Victoria at around 6am and worked a service into Barrow. Then a Barrow to Preston service, then Preston to Barrow, then Barrow to Manchester Victoria, then Manchester Victoria to Barrow, and finally Barrow to Preston service.

The Barrow drivers where only passed for class 31's loco wise, and a host of DMU's. Towards the end we sometimes got a pair of class 101's instead of the class 31's.

Hope this helps

Ian
