HSB
Hi all, I tried taking some video with my camera while staying at Kamp Bornhofen last week. You can see the results here:-
duff man
Hi Howard. It looks as though you had a good trip rail fanning. I always find the Rhine valley railways interesting. Thanks for posting. Craig.
HSB
Here are a few photos I took. Certainly a lovely part of the world and I hope to go back there some time.
Brian Harrap
Hi all, I tried taking some video with my camera while staying at Kamp Bornhofen last week. You can see the results here:- Nice video Howard. I stayed at that campsite opposite Lorelei a couple of years ago in Febuary and was the only one there. It was actually closed but a camping card with 'Baron' on it works wonders (and the Baron charm of course). Great train watching spot. B
HSB
Thanks, Brian. I'm planning to go back there next year, hopefully with better weather (it rained on the first 2 days there), Hopefully I'll be able to get some pics beside the main line on the other bank of the Rhine. See you soon
HSB
I went over again at the end of last month. Here are are a few of the pics I took this time:-
admiles
Nice photos, thanks for sharing. I wonder who the dark green Br 140 belongs too? Any one know? No DB keks on the side so I presume it's in the hands of a private operator. Fairly sure DB don't have any left in regular service.
HSB
Here are a couple more pics which I have reduced in size a bit more as they wouldn't load up first time round:- And this is one looking up the Rhine at Koblenz (no trains but with a station)
eastwestdivide
Nice to see the Koblenz cable car. Did you manage to get one of the cars with the partial glass bottom? The station is Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein by the way.
HSB
I just caught the first car that came each way - I assumed they were all the same! One of the people with me has a fear of heights so wouldn't have gone in one of those anyway! Here are three pics taken in the Mosel Valley looking across from the village of Alken:-
Allegheny1600
Hi Howard, What lovely photos, thanks. The rail scene has changed since I went there "only" 5 or 6 years ago!!! Back then it was mostly class 143's on the locals now it looks like they have all gone in favour of units, at least there is still variety in those and tons of freight too. The inevitable march of 'progress', ah well. Cheers, John E.
bgman
Back in 2007 I'd did a road trip through Europe and our first stop was in Koblenz on the opposite side to the main lines. Sadly I didn't manage to get any photographs that morning due to the excellent beer consumed from the previous night ! Excellent spot for rail fanning though, must go back ! HSB
All the short distance passenger trains seem to be articulated sets of various types and there are still loads of freight trains along both sides of the Rhine.
HSB
I've finally got around to edting the video I shot and uploading it to Youtube:- https://youtu.be/n2VKNJPDzo4

The interesting thing here is that on 16 March this year on the RE 1 line, the DB Class 429 sets have begun running in mixed pairs with the Stadler KISS double deck units obtained by CFL and classified as Series 2300. The latter are capable of running with 15 and 25 kV AC.
BRCW26010
Thank you for all those pix and uploads I went to Köln for the first time in the summer and spent most of my time wandering around with an idiotic smile on my face due to the number and variety of trains Can't wait to get back sometime. It was my first proper trip to Germany. Thanks again.
HSB
This was only my second visit and the amount of trains, especially freight, on both banks of the Rhine is certainly impressive. And German trains have so much more presence!
FelixM
The rhine corridor is the best known route in Germany where rail noise is a real problem. Combined with lack of additional capacity mainly due to more international traffic (in especially traffic flows that neither originate nor terminate in Germany) studies for a new route basically parallel to the old one and with more and longer tunnels are currently sketched out. HSB
I noticed they had put screens up both sides of the line where it runs through the village of Kamp-Bornhofen. Rather frustrating when you're trying to find a good spot to take photos!
FelixM
Try to get to an elevated location.

The latter are capable of running with 15 and 25 kV AC. I had a return Trier to Koblenz trip last week riding in the CFL KISS unit on the way out and the DB Class 429 on the way back. Very nice they both are too. The DB unit has the slightly nicer (in my opinion!) interior but the option of sitting upstairs on the CFL unit makes it the better one for me. The Mosel valley on a sunny day is just stunning. Watching them split and join at Trier was interesting too. The CFL units continuing to Luxembourg City and the DB units going to Homburg. I'd still prefer a class 143 and Dosto stock though! A good ten or so sidelined 143s were dumped out the back of Trier depot. Quite sad really. My first trip to Germany ever where I didn't see an operational class 111 or 218. Sign of the times sadly!
HSB
I think you'd need to be in a helicopter to see the tracks through the village. At the southern approaches to Kamp-Bornhofen, however, it is possible to get alongside both sides of the track:-
eastwestdivide
Two (or maybe three) more reasons to visit. The three hour KD line* boat trip between St Goar and Bingen was highly enjoyable, gently heading upstream, passing all manner of freight on both trains and barges. You don't get to choose your photo locations and wait for a train, but that doesn't matter too much when they're so frequent: A Class 151 on a mixed freight. And if you get cold or hungry standing around, there's always a window seat in the restaurant with schnitzel and Kölsch beer: Plus you get a discount on the ship ticket price for showing a DB rail ticket. *other boat trips are also available: The noise problem that FelixM mentioned a few posts up was apparent. Saw quite a few posters campaigning against "Bahnlärm" - rail noise. Plenty of those noise barriers by the line in towns and villages.
