Leon
Locomotive was 66001. Could not get a picture on the loading pad as there was a problem with the coupling according to the driver and shunter....Seen scratching there heads
br2975
Nice. . Where are they unloading Leon, Fletcher's Wharf by the Roath Dock ? . Sadly, I don't get the opportunity to visit the docks anymore. . Brian
Leon
Hi Brian, I did ask the shunter who told me it was for Cemex, I went over by Cold stores road but could not find the loading point??? There was a problem with the train so could not follow it over this time. It's been running for 6 weeks. I can't understand the need to run round it's train where it did looking at the local track layout, any ideas??? 40044
I should think there would be a problem with the coupling. 66001 is 1 of only 2 DBS 66s still fitted with a conventional screw coupling. Most of those wagons are fitted with auto couplers and do not have buffers or shackles.
Fat Controller
Someone obviously paired them by livery, without looking to see what else they might or might not have in common... Presumably this is stone from Westbury (or perhaps elsewhere) for local consumption? I did see some reports of DBS HTAs hoppers being used in stone traffic from Westbury last week. I wonder if it's for a specific project, or if it's for general consumption? Do Cemex not have any more local sources?
Leon
Very interesting about the coupling, yes they were looking at the Front of the loco scratching there heads trying to work out how to do it. The train seemed empty I assume it had been unloaded. Quick scout in the internet has it down as Acton to Cardiff Docks. It was gone this morning I assume they sorted it somehow?? In the past, this traffic has been loaded at Cardiff docks, Cwmbargoed and Machen, I believe.

Southernman46
Related only on a Line of Route basis but 60087 is booked for the Tilbury - Llanwern coils today................
br2975
"Ryans" is located on the south side of the Roath Dock. . There was once a loop and loading / unloading facilities here, but over the years the loop etc fell into decline and is now but a single line. . The nearest loop is further along the 'branch' adjacent to Longships Road (on the foreshore) so trains run here either before or after loading / unloading at "Ryans" and returning to Tidal. . This 2004 shot shows the location, with the '09' taking imported billets to the then recently reopened Cardiff Rod Mill, followed by 60059 on the Cardiff ABP - Newport ADJ. . John_Miles
I saw a train of about 6 wagons leaving Cardiff Docks with steel rod today. I was told that the steel works wasn't using rail traffic since the new owners took over some years ago.

Was it internal traffic for Celsa, I wonder, either between the two sites, or from one of them to the docks?

(that may help) There are some (few) mainline services from Tidal distributing steel products from Celsa. Celsa traffic doesn't normally run onto the docks proper - only uses the link from Tremorfa - Castle Works via 'Splott jct' . The 09 in my photo above was hauling billets to Tidal for reversal to Castle Works (Rod Mill) at the time Celsa were restarting production ater the purchase of the plants but were still not casting billets at Tremorfa. . John_Miles
The train was leaving the line from Tidal Sidings at Pengam and crossing over onto the up slow line. It was powered by a 66 and the wagons were what I call bogie bolsters. I had a friend who worked for Allied Steel & Wire in their rail depatment before they went bust and he has always maintained that Celsa don't send traffic by rail so this train intrigued me. Leon
It was more than likely this. Was loaded at Ryans Wharf at 9 this morning 66088 I think. Edited August 13, 2014 by Leon
Leon
It had coil on, I think it was off loaded from a ship over the last few days in Alexandra Dock.
br2975
Train originated at Trostre about 01:30, empty to Newport ADJ (run around) then ADJ - Cardiff Docks (Ryans) where it is normally due at 0737. . Departs again loaded about 11:20ish for Newport ADJ (run around) then to Trostre. . The path also allows for a service to and from Llanwern, but I don't know what form of steel that loads. . There is one, maybe two DB services from Tidal that may/can carry steel products from Celsa . 23:30 Tidal - Attercliffe EWS Sidings (Sheffield), or the 00:24 Tidal - Masboro' (Rotherham) . There's also 05:36 Tidal - Dagenham Down Yard, but I don't know what that loads/carries. . Most services into/out of Tidal are predominantly scrap trains. .
