RMweb Gold cambo74 Posted August 8, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 8, 2014 Hi there wondered if there was someone out there either on the forum or a friend of a friend etc who would be able to build me some OHLE Gantry masts - am looking for about 8 and they will be a 3 track span in diameter in 00 Gauge. They will need to vary in height slightly as some will be fixed to the platforms. Please PM me if you or anyone can help. Many thanks in advance Ben
Poor Old Bruce
Can't help with the building Ben but I can point out that the O(H)LE fraternity used to get annoyed at their structures being called 'gantries'. They prefer the term 'Portal Structures'. (Pedant mode off) I'll get me coat

I ask this so that I know which type of OLE you will need. If it is the older GER or southern end of the WCML then it could well be Mk1 you need. Most other parts of the country it will be Mk3. RMweb Gold cambo74 Posted August 8, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 8, 2014 Hi Paul thanks for the link....... Clive, its kind of a bit of everywhere - its a mainline through station set in the 80s to the present day with a Scottish Region and Southern Region feel (not all run together !!) Think the mk1 that you have illustrated would be the ones id be looking at Ben
RMweb Gold Dagworth Posted August 8, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 8, 2014 These are built from the N-brass kits in Paul's link. (although with scratchbuilt suspension equipment) Are you coming to RMweb Live at Coventry? If so come and talk to me there. A

Dave All my insulators are just a coil of tinned copper wire wrapped around a piece of 30thou brass rod to form them. I make them in a huge length by putting the brass rod in a battery drill and using the drill to wind them, once I have a full length of coil I can slide it off the former and cut it into lengths, about 7 turns for each insulator. The suspension equipment is a piece of solid wire about 1.5mm thick for the down tube, then the 30thou rod for the arm and 22 gauge guitar string for the registration arm. I can put up more detailed photos if it would help. Andi
DaveClass47
Hi Andi, Thanks for getting back to me, what you've said is very helpful indeed. I never intended scratch building any over head masts, but at one point of my layout I have a series of points that prevent me using the ready to plant Dapol stuff. So I am going to have to kit/scratch build some portals and masts. Any amount of photos are very welcomed. Close ups of the suspension sections with the details would be great thanks. And you use guitar wire for the contact wires too?
RMweb Gold Dagworth Posted June 14, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 14, 2016 And you use guitar wire for the contact wires too? Yes, all my contact and catenary wires are guitar string, tensioned by hidden springs. Andi
