Stephen M
Well I took my little boy (4yrs and 9 months) down the road to our local station (Langho) twice today to see 46233 go through with the Cumbrian Mountain Express. Never having seen a Duchess with 12 on before, he was suitably impressed when it came coasting down the hill from Blackburn in the rain this morning, smoke and steam clinging to the boiler and purring like a well oiled sewing machine! However, I think the evening event, with it clearly working hard up the bank from Whalley (but still sounding sweet as a nut!!), rumbling through the small station, making itself heard from miles away and for ages after it passed has left a pretty memorable impression. He has watched the video several times already. Time for a train set I think..... Steve

Stephen M
I gave him a clear run to Daisyfield he opened the throttle as he passed horrocksford here it isWhere about is Horrocksford and are you on the signals round there? He certainly had the taps open for a while as we saw the steam in the distance over Whalley viaduct and he was still going strong through Wilpshire by the sound of it. Pretty impressive and like I said - made a hell of an impression. I'd upload the video.....but it's 100mb and I have no idea how. If anyone cares, I will try tomorrow. Stephen M
That makes a lot of sense!! I imagine with a full load it can be a bit of a slog up from Whalley. Not sure what a full load for a Duchess over that route would be but I would expect it had a bit more in reserve with 12 on.
Poor Old Bruce
I read somewhere once that the Coronations were specified to take 500 Tons up Shap and Beattock at 50 MPH. 12 coaches is about 400 Tons so should be a walk in the park. I once watched a Duchess taking off ('leaving' makes it sound too mundane) from Crewe. The drain cocks were open and the safety vales blowing off. Little kids were running for cover but I was lapping it up. Fantastic stuff.
