micknich2003
Why back in early 2009 I posted on the old RM Web, photot's and details of a tall co-acting bracket signal, and once at Grantham I was constructing. Oweing to work and other matters I was not able to complete the model. John Brighton has now done so, and attached one of John's photo's of the completed job. chaz
Superb! You don't say what scale it is to. (You didn't fancy it with somersaults then?)
LNER4479
Looks magnificent, and somewhat more accurate than mine, which amounts to a cheap and cheerful compromise in comparison. I notice that the strengthening spars have been added - these appear to have been post-war patch-ups to keep the old thing going for a few more years longer before it was finally replaced by a colour light. micknich2003
4479, is your signal based on etches? You have down a good job, it's all square and the proportions look right. Best Wishes, Mick.
pete_mcfarlane
Nice model. That must have been the most instantly recognisable (and probably the most photographed) signal in the whole of Britain at one point.

LNER4479
4479, is your signal based on etches? You have down a good job, it's all square and the proportions look right. Best Wishes, Mick. Thanks, Mick, Yes - I just go to the MSE stand, show Andrew (Hartshorne) a picture of a signal and say 'I want to make that one'. He then scoots round and looks out the parts required and I then just put it together. As you will know far better than me, many signals were assembled from standard parts (either by contractors or from the company's own source) so in a way you're just replicating this in model form. I usually find a reasonably 'square on' picture and check the proportions from that. As I say, a bit 'cheap and cheerful' but it works for me. I'm currently working on the seventh and eighth signals for my Grantham project and still a few more to go.
micknich2003
You are correct, and most signals were indeed built up from standard "Off the Shelf" parts. Here is a M&H "Shop Drawing", and though basic, there is enough detail for the shopmen to assemble the signal(s).

Is it in a public archive, hopefully with many others?
micknich2003
Chaz, the model is 4mm scale. I didn't put somersault arms on, because at the time of the layout UQ arms were fitted. Attached picture of a large bracket I made years ago, but with somersault arms.

"Attached picture of a large bracket I made years ago, but with somersault arms." And a superb model it is. Having built a 7mm bracket signal with one somersault arm on it I can only admire this lovely model. Pleased to see your spectacle plates work in tandem with the arms - as they should. Brilliant!
