RMweb Gold lakeview770 Posted September 22, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 22, 2014 Hi, I need a little help with a bunch of Slaters kits I have. My regular solvent Testors liquid cement seems to have no effect on the plastic its as if the kit is made from asbestos and not plastic, all it does is tack the darn parts. Do I need a stronger solvent? I have lightly sanded the edges to be joined as per the instructions. I don’t really know of any stronger solvent other than whats available over the counter at Lowes, which is pure Acetone or MEK. Andy
RMweb Gold RedgateModels Posted September 22, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 22, 2014 I'd go with the MEK
Spitfire2865
I use testors liquid cement and my slaters kits go together fine, which colour cement are you using? Red tube may work better in your case, though I find the blue works well enough.
Marshall5
I'm currently using Testor's liquid cement on a Parkside kit (same polystyrene as Slater's IIRC) and it works fine. O.K. it's an old bottle - maybe they've changed the formula since I bought it. ' Might be worth trying some MEK on a scrap piece as Slater's MekPak was originally MEK based. Ray. RMweb Gold lakeview770 Posted September 22, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 22, 2014 Thanks guys Im using a brand new bottle of Testors Red label stuff, the kits may be old too some are Slaters some are Slaters/ C&L and the price labels indicate they’re from last century. RMweb Gold lakeview770 Posted September 22, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 22, 2014 HaHa just found some 15+ year old Humbrol Liquid Poly in my box of aircraft models and it attacks the plastic perfectly, trouble is it’s not going to last me. I have 10 kits to build and about another 6 on the way from the UK. Tenax 7R cement costs about $13 and 2 pints of MEK about $6. Looks like Ill be trying some MEK on some old sprue tonight. I used a wagon I had no intention of running on my layout, if I decide to rebuild it that is. The liquid poly worked but not before the Testors did a little damage to the kit and probably my inexperience.

I use exclusively Tenax on my plastic kits. Only time I use anything else is for mixed-medium, like brass to plastic. It does work on the ABS plastic, but not as well as it does on Styrene I've built 6 Slaters/Parkside kits (all 7mm) in the past few months with Tenax and they're stuck together pretty well. I had to remove one part I glued in the wrong place and really had to work to remove it without destroying it. If its not available at your local hobby shop, I know you can get it online from Caboose Hobbies or N scale supply for $5 a bottle. (shipping might more than double that...) brossard
Funny that you're having trouble with Testor's solvent Andy. The red label stuff says it contains MEK so it should work on just about anything. John
RMweb Gold lakeview770 Posted September 23, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 23, 2014 Not sure why it isn’t taking, going to order some Tenax 7R $13 inc S+H is the cheapest Ive found, still cheaper than driving to my local hobby shop in Pensacola. RMweb Gold lakeview770 Posted October 1, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2014 Well I reckon it must have been the age of the plastic, just built a Parkside Dundas kit with the Testors glue and it worked a treat. As I said the kits are priced I guess with 1980’s prices on. Andy
