RMweb Premium Neil Posted September 23, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2014 Hello Stag, have a look at this page, it should help with the history of BR diesel liveries.
RMweb Premium CloggyDog Posted September 23, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2014 Small Yellow panels started around 1961/62 Locos being built at that time had the yellow panels from new - so the last few disc-headcose 20s, 25s, 31s, 37s, and 45s would have them on delivery. Green Class 47s all had yellow panels from new. Locos delivered earlier in the plain green would have had the yellow panels painted on after that date, though some certainly lasted well into the late-1960s without. Difficult to advise on the 5-vol series of books without knowing a title, sorry.
RMweb Gold stovepipe Posted September 23, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 23, 2014 Generally speaking, new locos had small yellow panels from March 1962 onwards.

RMweb Premium CloggyDog Posted September 23, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2014 And full yellow panels were late-1960s onwards - the last batches of 20 and 47s were delivered in blue with full-yellow ends, along with the 50s - 1968 or so. Early blue locos could have small panels (from 1965-66) and some green locos got full panels from c1968-onwards. There may even have been a shortish overlap period where it was possible to see a green loco* with no yellow and a blue (or green) loco with a full yellow end. *I've certainly seen 1966 dated photos of a 20 and a 33 still in all-over green. slilley
The Crewe built Class 47s were all delivered in green with small panels even those built after BR policy changed to full yellow ends. The last of the Brush built locos were delivered in blue with full yellow ends.
mark alden
On the WR the Yellow panel first appeared on 16/01/62 when D834 left Swindon after repairs, it was followed by D822 on the 26th. D859 was the first 800 to enter traffic with the Yellow panel from new on 09/01/62. D7019 was the first new Hymek to have a Yellow panel, from 14/02/62. D7018 was delivered new without a Yellow panel on 17/01/62 but after a few days in traffic went into Swindon for minor attention, coming out on 31/01/62 with the Yellow panel. With the 22's D6337 was new with Yellow from 13/03/62 with 6325 getting its Yellow end from 10/01/62 followed by 6305 on 12/01/62. With the 1000's D1002 was new in Green with Yellow, and the first from new in Maroon was D1011. Quite why 1001/1005-10 came out with Yellow buffer beams whilst the Yellow panel was being applied to other classes is not known other than the painting drawing date was probably slow in filtering down to the shop floor. From those dates then - it's likely that the official 'start painting yellow panels instruction' came into effect on 01/01/62 ?
mark alden
I would say so, the decision would probably of been made December 61 and by the time the info filtered throughout it would be implemented once official paint drawings had been made so the painters could follow a 'standard' although on Swindon painted 800's and 22's there did seem to be a variation of pointed top and flat top panels.
