CSX Liveries

I thought we had a thread on the various CSX loco liveries over the years? Needless to say I can’t find it..

Here’s the latest with the “How Tomorrow Moves” logo. Note how it is “reversed out” on the nose. “Brighter Future”? CSX are making money like they are printing it.

Thanks to Adrian we can now call it "CSX - yn3b"

As the photographer comments, these locos were supposed to be transferred to NS - by all accounts - so he was surprised to see this outside of the paint shops.

Best, Pete.

Start here:

also

http://www.bullsheet.com/news/csxroster.html

And I have seen fairly definite news that NS is going to pick up the rest of the SD80MACs from CSX, as well as a bunch of SD9043MACs from UP (to be rebuilt to SD70ACe specifications)

The cynic in me says that CSX repainted that unit so that it would have the current scheme on it when NS patched it. Sort of payback for the B40-8s, some of which went to CSX in full NS paint (and so went into service in plain black http://www.trainweb.org/csxphotos/photos/B40-8/5974ns.jpg )

The variant with the lined gold logo was nice - but that livery never aged very well. That doesn’t seem to be pictured on the link Adrian provided (but I didn’t look very hard).

yn3  Dark Future, does look much better “in the flesh” - though CSX does not seem to keep their locos as clean as NS, which almost invariably look smarter.

Best, Pete.

The yellow/gold centred CSX was limited to the AC6000CWs (CSX: CW60AC) and is CSX-bc2 on the first website. Note that these colour designations are enthusiast-defined and, as such, not necessarily consistent among said enthusiasts (just like RMWeb then).

What the first website calls CSX-bc, the Withers book and Bullsheet call YN2.

Also, neither of the websites acknowledges the transitional (patch) schemes like the ex-LMS C40-8Ws (blue), the ex-NS B40-8s (black), or the ex-Conrail units (blue with various Conrail logos), although these are pictured in the Withers book.

Well, the shades are a a bit different, but we could call it "pseudo-BR corporate"... ;)

Yeah, I already linked a copy of the photo to one of the BR Blue threads...............

Best, Pete.

You guys beat me to it.

Sort of "What Class 66 would've looked like in BR Blue(ish)" ;) (I think that was done on "Fictitous Liveries" website)

An early YN3 paint job...except the nose wasn't executed all that well...with a cattywampus logo. - June 2002 my photo

And a YN2 livery that's extremely clean and well done - April of 2001, my photo.  I personally really liked this livery the best of any of the CSX liveries.

And the primordial CSX livery, one of two GP40-2s that got the livery; only nine got it in total - August 1986, my photo

Very Good! Andy, much appreciated and very handy for weathering purposes...

Interested to see some that are named - are CSX still doing this?

Craig - Great shots too!

Keep them coming.

Best, Pete.

I believe there are a few new names, one of the FB groups Im a member of were having a heated discussion recently on the naming of a locomotive. The complaints were mainly to do with how it was written I understand it was so small and badly drawn/written that it was a disgrace to be even named and CSX should be ashamed. I believe it was written in Banksy 12pt.

Of note is a local railroad who also name their fleet. TRR the Alabama State Docks RR.

From late 1990s until 2004 or so CSX was a mish-mosh of liveries.  Around 2004 the YN2 'bright future' began to really dominate but before then it was variety.  Not as wild as the first ten years of CSX with them digesting SCL, Family Lines, Seaboard System, Chessie, L&N, Clinchfield and all the rest but still interesting.

Some more samples...my photos unless noted....

A very clean AC4400 at Hamlet NC...11 March 2001

A going away shot of AC6000 668 at Hamlet, NC 6 Nov 99.  The AC6000s wore a unique livery with the blue outlined CSX on the hood.  Also unique - the huge radiators leading to the 'porch roof' on the long hood end.

An ex PRR/Penn Central Alco RSD-12 was the fodder for this slug, retrucked with EMD trucks, at Cheektowaga, NY 13 July 01.  Yellow ends have been applied; slug mother is an SD40-2 and used on the hump at Frontier Yard.

And a slightly earlier version of that livery on a GP-based slug at Hamlet, NC 30 April 2000

A pair of GP16s at Roanoke Rapids NC on the old Seaboard, April 1989, Warren Calloway photo, in the first widely-applied livery; basically the successor to the 'Transportation' livery.

A C40-8 in the 'ghost' livery...not noted for high visibility.  Warren Calloway photo, Hamlet NC 12 Mar 95. The C40s were oddballs with the tilted cab numbers.

post-751-0-96056800-1412083657_thumb.jpg

To address the visibility issue of the 'ghost' and first liveries, CSX added a yellow nose; this one's a GP35-based road slug at Hamlet, NC 5 Mar 2000.  These GP30 and -35 based slugs are still in service.  Crews like them because they're quiet!

The other unique thing about these was the dual lighning bolts on the cab.

The CSX livery variations doesn’t just apply to locomotives, their rolling stock fleet is also quite varied. Im currently sorting photos from March of this year and have seen quite a few pre CSX cars obviously they’re not in a hurry to repaint them or spend the money should I say.

There are all sorts of cars running around with 30+ year old paint schemes on them. As long as they are reasonably sound and they are still trackable (numbers legible), nobody seems to care much about the basic livery.

Oh man, that's the passenger station in Rocky Mount, NC.  Can't count the number of times I've rolled by there since I transferred to Richmond this March.  One can only ride the same ~125 miles so many times before going insane!

CSX also name track machines - GMS-1 "Spirit of R.F. Silbaugh" track geometry car at Hamlet NC

(in horrible harsh sunlight - but as I'm 3000 miles from home & unlikely to see it again -  I'm taking the pic)

Good catch - I'm thinking you were down by the station and diamonds.
