trisonic
Found this nice little amateur film from a drone of my local shortline, the “Black River and Western”. Some good overhead shots of the Yard and maintenance facilities at Ringoes, NJ. The BR & W is really two railroads; a tourist one and then a serious small freight line. http://www.brwrr.com Best, Pete.
Brian D
Great stuff. Didn't think those cars were going to stop at the railroad crossing though Regards, Brian.
F-UnitMad
Pete - you are a BAD man!!! STOP posting stuff like this - although I am Kettle-immune, that part from about 1:40 to 2:10 has "Model Layout Potential" written all over it!! How am I supposed to stay Mid-Western Focused with inspiration like this on RMweb??!!?? PS didn't the Black River have some appallingly bad track..??!!?? Andy Reichert
I'm amazed the picture is so steady. Do the cheap drones work that well?
highpeak
Based on the footage around 1'40" I think you should start a thread how model-like are your real trains. I presume the drone of the drone meant the videographer had to forgo the actual sounds. But Andy's right, amazingly steady video. Are you sure it wasn't a really tall tripod? trisonic
Andy, The one I mentioned in the OP of the other thread entitled “Dronefanning” (see: Photography section) does. You can put the drone into position and then actually place the R/C controller on the ground it will keep itself in the position that you told it to - but it does have GPS. That’s important for other features too like backtracking if it loses contact with the radio signal, for example. Depends on what you mean by cheap. That comes with built in WiFi, Camera on shock mounted gimbal (controlled by smart phone) R/C controller and the GPS features has a street price of less than $1,300.00. It’s about 35cm across its longest axis. A $40.00 one wouldn’t. Best, Pete. I'm amazed the picture is so steady. Do the cheap drones work that well? trisonic
This is the actual drone I was referring too, the Phantom 2 Vision Plus (there’s also a 4 page article referring to it in the October 2014 edition of RailPace): http://www.dji.com/product/phantom-2-vision-plus You can check out all the features from that page. I have absolutely no connection with DJI, Phantom or RailPace Best, Pete.
trisonic
PS didn't the Black River have some appallingly bad track..??!!?? Nothing that you couldn’t model, Jordan! I took the photos with a long throw lens from the start of the Yard through to the disused section (which used to go to Lambertville - check it out on Google) I think I used a 600mm lens which makes just about any track look wonky (US technical term ) I’m sure they wouldn’t mind if you transposed the BR & W to Soo territory.... trisonic
Jordan, I found the photo you meant, this one: Click on it to make it bigger! This was taken from the Yard in that movie looking West...... You know I think you’re right Ringoes would make a nice model! Has a passenger station too: Note: Interesting bench! Fascinating diesel selection too: http://www.bdrry.com/Locomotives/Locomotives.htm Best, Pete.
