Ruffnut Thorston
Hi. I have just came across this photo online of an Eastern Region Breakdown Crane.... It is a pretty dead ringer for the Hornby Dublo Crane, which is also Eastern Region.... (Middle dated model with early type plastic couplers shown. The earlier 1959 ones have metal couplers, and the late 1960s models have Delrin type couplers, different winding handles, and a gloss paint finish too.) Ruffnut Thorston
This crane has something of the Rovex Hornby Railways crane... The Hornby Railways crane is meant to be a 75 ton crane... The introduction of heavy diesel locomotives as part of the modernisation plan generated a requirement for higher capacity breakdown cranes, existing breakdown cranes having a capacity of only 45 tons. Twelve 75 ton (76 tonne) capacity cranes were therefore ordered from Cowans Sheldon of Carlisle, they were steam powered. (Ten were ) converted from steam to diesel hydraulic power at BR Derby Works between 1976 and 1978. Today five are understood to be preserved at various heritage railway sites, the remainder have been scrapped. Il Grifone
Hi. I have just came across this photo online of an Eastern Region Breakdown Crane.... https://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6416903207/ It is a pretty dead ringer for the Hornby Dublo Crane, which is also Eastern Region.... It looks quite reasonable as a prototype and elaborates my comments elsewhere as to the red livery. I think the Dublo crane is, in fact, based on a Cowans Sheldon crane, but is a little short in the jib, as a concession to 15" radius curves. The runner wagon is rather longer than Dublo's!
