Coaching bodies

Recommended Posts

If you can get hold of cheap bodies from a spares supplier or a swapmeet then if you feel confident you can try it, but dont expect to be perfect straight away. We all started somewhere and we all learnt from making mistakes and keeping going. If you like what you make and are happy with the finished result then keep it.

Some companies just sell the shell to be put onto a chassie they recommend for it or its built for such as Keen Systems with there Golden Arrow body shells. Got a couple of coaches on the shelf iv concidered turning into a rake and was exploring the idea or concept such as my 2 Blue/Grey Hornby mk1 Golden Arrow dining cars adding the full rake and trying things myself by finding some dead mk1s u usially find in boxes for sale under the table at shows and using the chassie as the base

A good place to start could be the Dapol LMS coach kits. These are coaches normally available RTR but come in unbuilt form for simple assembly. Everything is included with bogies, wheels and ready painted bodies. Very handy for practicing on and detailing.

Looking at a pair of unbuilt Keen Pullman cars that I have, the only difficulty in assembly that I can see is changing the buffer beams to the correct type which are included. There is also a small bit of flash around the window apertures. This will need careful removal with a sharp knife and needle files. That's apart from the obvious painting, glazing, etc. They are made to clip fit directly onto the older Hornby (now Railroad) Pullman chassis and you are expected to alter/build the interior yourself.

If you don't want to paint the panelling and lining on these coaches then precision labels www.precisionlabels.com make these as self adhesive labels Ref: L13 Queen Of Scots. Fox Transfers also make suitable transfers. These coaches were originally used on the LNER before moving to the Southern Region in BR days.

Hope this is of some use.

Jason.
