RonnieS
Once again I am taking advantage of the superior knowledge of others! By appealing for help. I have recently acquired 2 new Hornby Castles and seek to rename/renumber them. First up is 7036 to 5089. Now to my (LMR biased) eye it seems straightforward but knowing that 5089 Westminster Abbey was once a Star there may be detail differences?
RMweb Gold Metr0Land Posted November 2, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 2, 2014 Depending on date you are modelling you can get boiler and tenders details here http://brdatabase.info/locoqry.php?action=locodata&type=S&id=5089&loco=4069
Unknown Warrior
A useful book is "Portraits of Castles" by Bryan Holden and Keneth H. Leech. There are photos of every Castle in it and also useful sketches of individual differences. I have already mentioned it in another thread so sorry for the duplication. I assume that your 7036 is from The "A Date with the Duchy" Train Pack. The tender, which in the 2011 Catalogue is shown with early crest would be right for that period for 5089. A that time 5089 had tapered buffers. I am not sure from the catalogue picture if the buffers on your model are parallel or tapered. The other obvious thing to check is the shape of the inside cylinder casing. I suggest you get hold of as many photos of 5089 as you can and compare you model with them and take it from there. I am in the process of re numbering Ince Castle to Clun Castle and have gone through this process. Fortunately I am prepared to live with the detailed differences I have found so far! Hope these comments re useful.
RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted November 2, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 2, 2014 Another excellent book is the Irwell Press re-release 'The Book Of The Castles'.Plenty of information and photos shewing every class member.
Coach bogie
As it is an ex Star the inside cylinder casing is narrower on 5089 compared to a 'standard' castle. The only ones to use the 'standard' wider cylinders were the double chimney rebuilds Mike Wiltshire
RMweb Gold Taz Posted November 3, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 3, 2014 Mike, Even some of these didn't get wider inside cylinder covers if the front frames were never replaced. For example 5092 Tresco Abbey was double chimney/4 row superheater boiler fitted but went to her maker with her original narrow front frames (and corresponding inside cylinder cover). I've been looking around for a suitable inside cover to model Tresco Abbey but despite help from here (including Mike) I've drawn a blank and think the only way to do it might be to file down the Hornby original. EDIT: Another difference between 7036 and 5089 is the cabside handrails. 7036 has the later L shape pattern in front and below the cab side window whilst 5089 would have had the earlier straight handrail below the window. Yes I have just been sent an image of 5092 at Hereford in a shocking state and the joggled frames can clearly be seen. Learn something new every day. I was always under the impression that the double chimney engines received new front frames/cylinders as per 5084 Reading Abbey Thanks Mike Wiltshire
westerner
You could also look at this website http://www.greatwestern.org.uk/index.htm[/url] Particularly this page http://www.greatwestern.org.uk/m_in_cas.htm Click on relevant number series in the grey section This will give you greater details of each loco. RonnieS
I want 2 single chimney variants with little or no mods to the Hornby model. Except for later tender emblem as I want 1960-62. Having had a photo of 4082 Windsor Castle as my Screensaver for a couple of weeks I think this will be one. The other will be 7017 C J Churchward. I won't spend the £35 on the Number-plates/Nameplates just yet in case someone points out what I may have missed!

The original 4082 engine now numbered 7013 did have a double chimney and in addition, carried a large rectangular box on the smokebox side (drivers side) which was the reservoir the mechanical lubricator. This engine also had a new front end and lost the narrow frames in favour of continual frames as per the later castles. Mike Wiltshire
