Bluebell Model Railway Posted November 6, 2014 Share Posted November 6, 2014 Hi all I am looking for etched coach sides for Mk1 RBR diagram 33, I had brought a Bachmann RBR as a base a little while ago, and has been sat on my shelf for a few months as I was slightly unaware of the situation with Comet Models. RBRs would be normally be referenced with a AJ4xx design code (which would vary depending on whether the origional vehicle was a RB, RU or RB(K) ex RF). AFAIK diagram 33 was supposed to be a generic diagram for refubised coaches; by the time referbishmenet was in full swing they had switched to design codes so not all RBRs had their ow duagrams. To confirm diagram 24 sides are fine for this model. Yes, diagram 24 sides are fine, I didn't realise that was an issue, but creating an accurate diagram 33 coach from a former diagram 24 vehicle is. It is a major gap in the ready to run market for those modelling the 1970s onwards. The changes (other than glazing already alluded to) are internal, with the addition of a buffet counter, the removal of a seating bay and probably the pantry. As you say, the changes varied. As such, the Bluebell coach is a diagram 33. I also have Parkin and I consider it essential from a modelling perspective. It's hardly the first "costume malfunction" on a heritage railway. For example, RMBs were never painted blood and custard or chocolate and cream; it hasn't stopped a good number of preserved coaches receiving it, or Bachmann and Hornby for that matter! Bluebell Model Railway Posted November 7, 2014 Author Share Posted November 7, 2014 I have contacted Southern Pride to confirm they are the right ones, as I don't have much information on their kits as I haven't built or seen any of their etched sides, so not sure what to expect, hopefully will hear something at some point.As you guys mention some of the coaches including i think a brake BSK is painted C/C which shouldn't be.. but that's the owners wishes apparently so that's why they are those colours.I've not heard of the colourmaster range.. any info on those? YK 50A Posted November 7, 2014 Share Posted November 7, 2014 I would have tried both the Colourmaster and Etchmaster ranges, a BFK, RKB, RSO, maybe a Griddle Car and some Newton Chambers car carriers would have been particularly interesting, but from a serious modelling perspective (if playing with toy trains can ever be serious) I'm moving to G Gauge live steam. Other than what's on the Southern Pride website, I don't have anything to add I'm afraid. I would be interested to know how you get on though! Alun PS I have more important things to get upset about than heritage railways incorrectly painting a 65 year old coach. I am pleased it exists at all! giz Posted November 7, 2014 Share Posted November 7, 2014 I've made a few of the Colourmaster kits in the past. They are basically a plastic coach kit that assembles in a similar manner to the old type Hornby Mk1 (if you've ever taken one apart). The sides are clear plastic with a pre-fixed coloured overlay. Bogies are either RTR or white metal overlays on a one piece plastic frame. The Etchmaster range are basically the same but instead of the pre-coloured side you get the clear plastic only to which you apply the etched brass overlay, which of course you have to paint. I haven't built one as such* but the only parts to add to the sides are door handles and hinges and these can be glued. * I do have an unfinished ER parcels emu which I started years ago using MJT brass sides and Southern Pride body shells which he supplied to me without the coloured overlays in the days before the Etchmasters were released. Bluebell Model Railway Posted November 7, 2014 Author Share Posted November 7, 2014 Thank you Giz, gives me a better idea of how the sides go together and how to use them, as I have brought a RBR which is in intercity livery, so was looking at the best way to change the sides, as windows and doors were in the wrong places.
