Is it like the logo on the bunker of this;

If so, I don't have a better photograph but I may well have a square on, black on white, printed logo which I could scan.

Hi Arthur,

I tried that photo and they said it was not good enough.  Can I try your black & white logo??  They already know what colors are required.

THANK YOU,

Roy

Thought it might be Roy, I'll see if I can find a better one. The problem is that the clarity of print in these old publications is often not up to modern standards.

I'll let you know either way.

Hi Arthur,

Hope you can find the orginal you mentioned, the one you posted will be to fuzzy for the decal guy.

THANK YOU,

Roy

Surely your decal guy will not try and print directly from an image file?

He needs to redraw the logo as a vector graphic - which should be easy enough from the B&W image, fuzzy though it is.

That way he'll get a dead sharp print.

John Isherwood.

I've found one which is a little better at least. I was trying various scanning methods at the weekend to get the best results. I'm now away for a week and will resume the attempt when I get back.

John, do you have any tips on scanning, the best file formats etc.?

I usually scan in .jpg format at as high a resolution as is practicable, with anti-aliasing switched on only if the image is printed from a screen of geometrically spaced dots.

If the image is not square-on, it is usually possible to pull it into a rectangle that looks sensible.

I believe that there is software out there that can compensate for perspective compression, but I just stick with Corel Photopaint and uniformly space the traced characters.

Bear in mind that signwrighters would try and avoid odd fractions of an inch in letter heights; it's amazing how often lettering sized to the nearest scale inch appears spot-on compared to the photo of the original. Why would they want to make life difficult?

BR rolling stock lettering height in 4mm. scale is based on multiples of 1.4 pt., which just happens to be 1" when scaled up to full size.

John Isherwood.

The lettering on the 2 Yorkshire Engines at Cottesmore is correct for all (if not the vast majority, and certainly all that I have seen images of) the Ore Mining Branch locomotives of USC - both steam and diesel.

It should be noted however that the OMB diesels and a few of the steamers never carried this logo in a box.

I would suggest that  HE3846's depiction of the logo is either from an official document/carried only by green liveried locomotives in  the steel works/completely fictitious.
