micklner
Nothing obvious on a search. Has anyone ever done these conversions ? In particular any suggestions on improving the dire underframes on these Coaches please. A obvious problem is the floorpan being moulded flat level with bottom of the Solebars. thanks
SRman
Not Thompsons or Bachmann: the nearest I have done is to use Southern Pride Bulleid sides in Hornby mark 1 underframes. Not exactly an accurate combination but the SP construction suits and almost matches the old Triang/Hornby construction, with the sides slotting into the solebars with only a little modification to the thickness of the bottoms of the tabs. That still leaves me having to rebuild the incorrect underframe details, though, and these would, if anything, be even worse than the bit you don't like about the Bachmann underframes. RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted November 21, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 21, 2014 Tony Wright did them with SP sides on a DVD. I'm quite sure Stoke Summit Thompsons were conversions and sides from SP. Can't remember if he did anything to the UFs. I have some rubbish old Thompsons sitting with some very nice SP sides ready to do 'one day' and before you ask, yes I need Thompsons at Seaton Junction! davidw
I have and as Phil has said T W did some. As regards the underframe, I replaced one of mine with a comet etch brass before the Bachmann announcement of retooled thompsons. Other tthan a basic box there was not much left of the original coach.

If other Diagrams are required and SP or Comet do the sides then maybe the new UF will be OK too so conversions would be worth doing. However, as Davidw says, there is not a lot of original coach left so is it really worth it? One might as well build a kit. P P

P P Good point, but there is no kit of the Flying Scotsman Thompson ( extended sides) stock other than the Southern Pride sides as far as I know . I am going to model that stock as the plain sides Full Brakes were only built for this set in LNER days. Others as made by Bachmann are BR days only. They are incredibly good value at £7.50 a set , the current Thompsons are cheap as well via flea bay as well. What I will consider is MJT parts for the handrails and underframes which aren't that expensive either.
doodaa
I have done quite a few following this method, SP sides, fix the roof profile as done by Tony Wright, Tidy up the ends and new MJT/Comet Gangways, Jumpers and Buffers. On the underframes I carefuly remove the battery boxes, leaving the truss rods in place, then Vac Cylinders and Dymamo, then I add a new plastic card floor to cover up the holes, and rebuild with MJT parts. Did not touch the bogies other than to add steps where required Steve

The SP FS extended sides are lovely etches arten't they and as you say, very good value. Excellent project for the winter. Phil

Tony posts on here so just ask. He is a good guy.
