Seaton Junction. Was there loco watering facilities circa 1960?

Good evening. An obscure question I know, however I have just been browsing my copy of Operating History (BR) Southern Region West of Salisbury (Summer Saturday 1961).

There is a brief mention of a discussion by 'mangement' in attendance at Seaton Junction when there were WR diversions in operation. A Hall is due to run down from Salisbury and they are asking about tender capacity etc. To cut a long story short it says they decided to loop it at Seaton Junction to take water.

Now, I am planning to build a layout representing Seaton Junction and nowhere in my research in books and film have I seen water columns.

This is not to say there were none, but I am fairly certain there wasn't.

There was 'loco water' at Colyton and Seaton itself but not at the Junction I am sure.

Can anyone answer my question please. IMO the story in the book is wrong. I think it would have to have taken water at Axminster (not sure about Honiton) . Thanks

Phil.

That would be correct. There was no water column at Seaton Junction or Chard Junction. There was however water columns at Axminster on the Up and Down platforms, and at Honiton on the Up platform.

According to the 1934 SA, between Salisbury and Exeter water columns were provided in both directions at Gillingham, Templecombe, Yeovil Junction, Axminster and Honiton - and nowhere else in either direction.

I would have been surprised if the situation changed at all over the next 33 years, although individual supplies would have become unavailable temporarily for one reason or another from time to time with details being shown in the weekly SNs.

Phil - I've just posted a reply to this but it seems to have been eaten by something before it appeared on the thread!

Nothing to add to what others have said - water apparently at Axminster & Honiton but not Seaton Junction.  Branch trains were provided for on the branch rather than at the junction.

When we were there the other week I think I mentioned the Umborne website but never gave you the url.  Have a look at:

http://umborne.org/2011/07/seaton-junction/

you may find some photos you haven't seen before.
