POW Coaches

I was reading an old RMWEB topic yesterday which had a post about the possible use of Gresley B17 2808 to haul a train of POW's to Much Hadham on the Buntingford line in WW2

If it was used what coaches would it have likely hauled?

It would depend partly on where the train came from. If it came from a port the coaches would have been supplied by the relevant company, such as Southern (e.g. from Southampton), LMS (e.g. from Liverpool) or GWR (e.g. from Portland). I doubt if transfers between camps would be of entire trainloads, but they would be when POWs were being shipped to Canada. Again, the stock would probably come from the company local to the originating camp.  I would expect the coaches to be older, pre-grouping stock that wasn't in regular use. So unless you want to replicate that specific train you can use whatever fits. I don't know whether they would use gangwayed stock, so that guards could monitor the train, or compartment stock. Sorry I can't be specific but I have considered the issue in relation to my Weymouth project. There is probably better info out there somewhere, but not necessarily on the web. The trains probably weren't photographed much.

Hi Pete

That's much as I thought, I guess the best thing is I could use virtually anything as I doubt anyone actually knows, these were POWs being taken to the camp at Much Hadham.

Unless anyone else has any idea?
