wirey33
....which shows the GWR 52xx at work? I've seen an Ian Allan title "Steam in South Wales" - Anyone have a copy? Any 52xx shots? I'm a total diesel head but the shape of the 52xx is quite "attractive" and I'd like to learn more.
buffalo
Well, strictly speaking there is no such thing as a 52XX class, as 5200-4 were members of the 42XX class (with 4200-99). Indeed, those often referred to as the 5205 class (5205-94) were simply the version of the 42XX class built from 1923 onwards. A number of these were stored, unused, for a while before being rebuilt as 72XX class 2-8-2T. The whole story is, of course, much more complex when it comes to the details. One of the best sources of photos of the 42XX and 5205 2-8-0Ts is the two part article 'The 42XXs in Traffic' by John Copsey in GWRJ Nos 69 and 70. For 72XXs his article '72XX Goods Tanks' in GWRJ No 18 also has many photos. Nick

Ian Allan did quite a few books on GW steam. As Nick points out, the GWRJ volumes can point the way. I think I've got one knocking around here, and yes, there are some 42/52xx shots in it. RMweb Gold phil_sutters Posted February 11, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 11, 2015 I can offer photos of 4294 at Newport, 5253 and 5259 at Cardiff, 7250 at Swindon and 7217 at Lawrence Hill - all taken by my father. One is rather fuzzy but the rest may be of interest.
