Peter Kazmierczak
A hospital appointment at Southampton General provided the ideal opportunity to spend a couple of hours at Southampton Maritime Container Terminal this afternoon. All in all, I saw x2 08s (both in action), a 59/2, a 66/4, x9 66/5s and x2 70s. I got so wrapped-up watching one of the 08s shunting that I almost missed 59202 passing with the 12.41 Chichester - Merehead empties, running half an hour late. If anyone's interested, I can post a few more pictures.

Peter Kazmierczak
The website www.realtimetrains.co.uk is a wonderful tool. However some of the information needs to be viewed with caution. This is a case in point. Millbrook Container Terminal (MCT) and Maritime Container Terminal (MCT) seem to be viewed as one location on that website when they are quite separate. There should've been a Wentloog arrival at 14.13 but even I can't totally miss a Freightliner train. I think it arrived at Millbrook Terminal (as it passed through Southampton Central in the down direction on the up fast) and this is the subsequent light engine movement (70019) to Maritime for refuelling. Can anyone confirm that 70019 did indeed work the 09.58 from Wentloog today?

Peter Kazmierczak
There can't be many places today were you can see not one, but two 08s in action. Here is 08691 toying with some empty Freightliner flats.

Peter Kazmierczak
Not to be out done, 08530 springs briefly into life and pushes a Freightliner wagon into the repair shop. 70019 is now on the fueller, whilst 66558 and 66543 are stabled on one of the two short dead-end sidings. Peter Kazmierczak
The only other Class 70 around at the time of my visit was 70001. It's still not received the external cooling box modification. Not sure what its inward working was as it was here when I arrived at 13.45.
Peter Kazmierczak
Coming as something of a relief, what with all the green-livered locos around, was 66418. This was also stabled at the end of one of the dead-end roads. All the former branding has been removed, replaced by small Freighliner vinyls. You'll need to "click" on the picture, otherwise you lose the loco's front buffers.....
Peter Kazmierczak
To end with, I always think that these machines look like something out of War of the Worlds.
JohnH
Thanks for posting these photos Peter. They're full of fascinating details of not only the locos but the variations of the types of wagons used on the container trains. The elevated position you've taken them from shows things from a very useful angle - certainly a great help to me and my developing 'present day' layout. Brilliant! Peter Kazmierczak
The 06.12 from Leeds arrives around 10 minutes late behind 66517 + 66589, sneaking through the containers. Maritime is a very busy terminal; you can see that all the roads are now occupied beneath the overhead cranes.
Peter Kazmierczak
How to change a blue box into a red box. There must be a certain knack in lowering containers so that they engage with the spigots on the wagon floor.

RMweb Premium jjb1970 Posted December 24, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 24, 2014 There must be a certain knack in lowering containers so that they engage with the spigots on the wagon floor. When I worked on container ships the crane drivers were paid silly money but they had to be fast. They were under a lot of pressure as to achieve fast turn arounds of the ships they have to land the container accurately first time every time to maintain a steady tempo. Nowadays the marine terminals are increasingly automated.
Anthony_S
I'm loving these pictures, keep them coming. I have fond memories of Southampton from my time as a student there. I only really saw the two terminals from a passing train so I'm finding this thread fascinating.
