Sylvian Tennant
I'm currently building a Q6 from the Dave Alexander stable, from the chassis up using a High Level gear box with a 2mm bored worm gear. I have a motor for it which uses a 2mm shaft and a worm gear already attached. Although this would seemed almost perfect I do fear that the worm gear wouldn't mesh properly with the High Level gear box. I have tried to remove it, but it appears to be thread locked tight and if I am able to I don't think the shaft is long enough anymore so best move on. I have been looking at other motors and the only ones available with a 2mm shaft are the mashima 14/28. Would these be able to fit inside a Q6 body or would I have to look into getting a smaller motor and possible a new gear worm? Sylv
buffalo
Knowing nothing about the Q6, I can't help with whether a 1428 will fit. However, if you need to fit a smaller motor,Chris at High Level is usually happy to supply alternative worms for smaller shafts for most of his gearboxes. Jol Wilkinson
Any of the Mashima 14xx series have a 2mm shaft. Worm outer diameters, pitch and skew (angle) vary from manufacturer to manufacturer so the worm already fitted may not be suitable for a HL gearbox.. If the worm has been fitted with Loctite or similar, heat will break it down, so apply a hot soldering iron bit to the end of the worm. Then support the worm and tap the shaft out. rope runner
If the worm has been fitted with Loctite or similar, heat will break it down, so apply a hot soldering iron bit to the end of the worm. Then support the worm and tap the shaft out. I would avoid adding heat, as excessive heat can and will melt the internals of your Mashima, see here: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/23202-shortening-a-motor-shaft/ I would recommend buying a gear puller, it will pay for itself after a few years. Much safer for the motor - and mine hasn't encountered anything which can't be pulled through as of yet. With regards to a new motor, High Level will supply an appropriate one at a very reasonable cost Paul A.
PGC
When I've had to remove worm gears in the past, I've cut a small slot in a piece of brass (for a 2mm shaft I drilled a hole 2mm dia. in from the edge of the brass, elongated it to the edge of the brass using a piercing saw and then filed it to a 2.1mm dia. slot), put this between the worm and motor then drifted the motor shaft out using a centre punch on the end of the shaft opposite the motor while the brass rested on the opened jaws of my vice. No heat involved and no damage to the shaft or motor. As a meerkat once said, shimples!!!! Hope that helps. Phil
Sylvian Tennant
i've just rechecked the motor that was given to me and it looks like i miscalculated the original dimensions. I looks like the motor I received is a 14xx type motor and it is a bit of a struggle to fit into the body. So I think I might leave this motor and contact the chap at High Level, from previous experience he is a good egg to deal with.
